50 YEARS AGO

The cattle market paused in mid-stride this week as apprehension of possible a price rollback by the government weighed in on otherwise positive market forces.

Bogle Brothers of Oklahoma City this week bought three loads of ewes at Mid-West Feed Yards in San Angelo at prices ranging from $23 each for yearling ewes to $12 per head for "cheater" mouths.

Texas Livestock Marketing Association of Fort Worth has sold 1250 mixed Hereford calves for J. N. Childress of Amarillo to the Chicago Producers at 30 cents a pound straight across with some of the long-ages out at 29 cents, for fall delivery.

Sid Slaughter of Fort Stockton several weeks ago delivered a string of lambs at 21 cents and received another string at the same time at 23 cents. More recently, he has been paying 25 cents and selling for the same price.

Up to last weekend, the rancher had contracted more than 60,000 lambs and 12,000 ewes in West Texas.

Johnny Braun of Midland has bought 100 Angus heifer calves from Russell Hays of San Angelo at 31 cents per pound for fall delivery, through Naylor Commission Company of San Angelo. These were the Phillips and Mayer calves, which Hays contracted several weeks ago.

Triplett Cattle Company this week sold two loads of steers from the company’s feedlots at Bovina to Armour and company at $29.50.

Jack Baggett has sold the lambs off his Reagan County ranch to Theron Weatherby of Big Lake at 25 cents per pound; they’re blackfaces.

45 YEARS AGO

Jess Haney, Hominy, Okla., last week bought 250 steer yearlings on Iowa order at $20 for immediate delivery.

Nick Holt, Gruver, this week delivered 450 heifer yearlings, weighing 632 pounds, to C.F. Augustine, Lamar, Colo., at $18 cwt.

Ed Rafferty, Gruver, this week bought two loads of mixed calves from Joe Bonot, Edna, Texas, for immediate delivery at $18 on heifers and $20 on steers; these weighed around 400 pounds.

Sam Cluck, Gruver, this week bought 120 mixed horned Hereford calves from A.J. Lindsay, San Antonio, for immediate delivery at $17 and $19; these weighed around 325 pounds.

Roy Henderson, Ozona, last week sold and delivered 1000 mixed blackface lambs to Louis Wardlaw, San Antonio buyer for Texas Livestock Marketing Assn., at $17 cwt.; these averaged 75 pounds pay weight and approximately 35 to 40 percent of the lambs were fat.

40 YEARS AGO

Lea Aldwell of San Angelo last week sold and delivered 203 Angus steer calves to P.A. Brooks of Midland at $28 cwt., with 25 of the heavy calves out at $26.50. The calves averaged 471 pounds.

Jim Price of Mt. Dora, N.M., sold 250 mixed breed plain steer yearlings expected to weigh near 700 pounds at $20.50 for October delivery to California buyers.

Harris Bros. of San Angelo bought 1000 yearling Rambouillet ewes from the Noelke Estate of Rankin this week at $16 each. The ewes will be placed on Harris Bros. Big Lake ranches.

I.W. Terry of Sterling City bought two loads of good Angus steer calves this week at $26 weighing 455 pounds from Roy Martin, San Angelo.

Jack Drake and L.F. Sneed, both of San Angelo, bought 1800 aged ewes at $6 per head from George Montgomery, Ozona, and received them this week.

Hugh Seely of Craig was elected president of the Colorado Wool Growers Assn. at their annual meeting in Vail. He succeeds Clarence Quinlin of Antonito.

Texico Feedlots at Texico, N.M., sold 146 fed steers weighing 965 pounds at $25.40 delivered to local packers.

Wool Growers Central Storage Co., San Angelo, sold about 500,000 pounds (200,000 pounds of it was eight-months) at 50 to 52 cents, some top quality 12-months up to 55 cents.

Hereford Feedlots sold 207 good and choice heifers weighing 895 pounds at $24.75, delivered to South Texas packers.

Cotton McDade, Clayton, N.M., sold 800 Hereford steer yearlings weighing about 670 pounds at $24.50 to Buster Wheat of Allen, Kan.

Texas Beef Producers, Dumas: 249 steers weighing 1025-1050 lbs., 75-80% choice, $30; 124 heifers weighing 825-850 lbs., 60-65% choice, $29.25.

The Idaho lamb movement remains large, peaking now in the Ketchum, Mountain Home and Boise areas, about to begin at Soda Springs. Feeder lambs have held a very steady $27-27.50 for several weeks, fats $28 f.o.b. shipping points.

Dick Wootten, Springer, N.M., sold 550 choice Hereford heifer calves and 550 steer mates weighing about 390 and 400 pounds at $35 and $39 to Ike Wiggins, Wagon Mound, N.M.

Bill Eubanks, Happy, sold 150 No. 1 Okie or better steers weighing 600 pounds at $32 to a Happy feedlot.

Charles Baxter Jr., Clovis, N.M., sold 293 No. 1 Okie steers weighing 614 pounds at $31.60 delivered to Clifton Cattle Co., Clifton.

David Winters, Del Rio, bought in the Brackettville area 2000 lambs weighing 65 pounds at $39.

Carson County Feedyards, Panhandle, bought out of the Claude area 34 No. 1 Okie steers weighing 735 pounds at $34 delivered.

Mason Feeders, Mason: four loads of heifers, 700 lbs., mostly good, $43.50; one load crossbred steers, 1050 lbs., good, $46.25.

National Livestock Commission Co., Oklahoma City, bought on the yards 107 No. 1 Okie steers weighing 465 pounds at $29; 13 mixed Okie steers weighing 312 at $27.43; and 35 mixed calves weighing 160 at $20.16 straight.

Nortex Feedlot Co., Dalhart: 52 heifers, 950 lbs., 65% choice, $47.50; 230 heifers, 875-900 lbs., 40% choice, $44.

Wichita Union Stockyards closes after 80 years. A stockyards spokesman said declining receipts and high overhead including city taxes made continued operations unfeasible.

Frederick Drummond, Pawhuska, Okla., sold to an Oklahoma buyer 450 choice Hereford and black baldface steers weighing 800 pounds at $71.

B&N Ranch, Parsons, Kan., bought in that area 180 No. 1-1½ Okie feeder steers weighing 840 pounds at $70.50.

Joe Williams, Fort Davis, bought in the Big Bend area 73 Angus and black baldface steers weighing 419 pounds at $80 and 129 crossbred Brahman heifers weighing 625 at $360 per head.

Bliss Cattle Co., Newkirk, Okla., bought in the local area 73 mostly choice steers weighing 649 pounds at $70.50, also 72 No. 1 heifers weighing 623 at $63.

The American Hereford Assn. announces formation of a registry for Braford cattle. The division is called the American Braford Registry. It will record "fullblood" Brafords, 5/8 Hereford and 3/8 Brahman. Intermediate crosses will also be recorded, too, but all must be from registered Hereford and Brahman parents.

Ty Jones Cattle Co., Canyon, bought in New Mexico 1140 No. 1 Okie steers weighing 700 pounds at $89; 220 choice steer calves weighing 450 at $107; 200 No. 1 Okie and crossbred steers weighing 775 at $86; 300 No. 1½ Okie steers weighing about 750 at $85.

JB Cattle Co., Abilene, sold to a local buyer one load of fancy crossbred and Okie steers and bulls weighing 339 pounds at $120, and to another local buyer a short load of heavy big, bred Brangus cows at $850 per head. The firm sold on a mostly delivered basis to Kansas buyers one load of No. 1 Okie and crossbred steers and bulls weighing 413 pounds at $106.97, also one load of similar steers and bulls weighing 421 at $103.91 f.o.b.
