Guy Allen Leads Steer Roping
Field For 12th Year In A Row
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The 2000 steer roping season came to a
close Sept. 16 in Pendleton, Ore., with the final event at the 90th
annual Pendleton Round-Up. For the 12th straight year, Guy Allen of
Lovington, N.M., will lead the top 15 steer ropers into the National
Finals Steer Roping Oct. 27-28 in Guthrie, Okla.
Allen's regular-season earnings of $86,386 are more than double
that of the rest of the field. In fact, he nearly broke his own record
for regular-season earnings, which he set in 1998 at $87,927. That
same year, he set the record for most money won in steer roping at
$99,132 — a record he could possibly break this year.
Allen, who in April surpassed $1 million in career earnings, is a
good bet to earn his record 15th world steer
roping title. "The Legend" won his first world steer roping
title in 1977 at age 19, and has won the past nine consecutive world
titles. Only Jim Shoulders has won more world championships, 16 in
all, and no one has won as many consecutive titles.
In the all-around competition, Scott Johnston, Gustine, Texas,
leads the pack with $154,240 in season earnings. He is followed by
Trevor Brazile, Decatur, Texas, with $136,800; Fred Whitfield,
Hockley, Texas, $124,687; Blair Burk, Durant, Okla., $114,256; and
Rich Skelton, Llano, Texas, $107,749.
