50 YEARS AGO

Joe Matthews of Albany, Texas, is reported to have sold 750 yearling steers for May 15 delivery at 40 cents a pound.

These are outstanding Herefords, expected to weigh around 500 pounds.

George Porter and Bill Jones of Amarillo have bought, from Davis and company of Crystal City, Texas, 300 light Brahman steers at 30 cents a pound for shipment to the Tovrea feedlots in Arizona. They also bought 300 mixed yearlings from H.W. Thompson of San Antonio for April delivery at 31 and 33½ cents.

Bradley and Petty, Tucumcari, New Mexico, reportedly have sold 400 mixed calves to Claude Davis of Amarillo for fall delivery at 34 and 35 cents per pound.

Carl Aldenhoven of Fort Worth has bought 140 Angus cows with 31 calves on them through Texas Livestock Marketing Association of Fort Worth at $360 per head for the cows with the calves thrown in. The calves weigh up to 330 pounds.

Triplett Cattle company of Amarillo has bought around 500 mixed calves in the Jal, New Mexico, area, and about the same number around Sanderson, Texas, for fall delivery at 34 cents straight across.

Jack Richardson of Uvalde has sold 5500 blackface ewe lambs for April and May delivery out of the wool at $30 per head. He also sold 2000 dry solid mouth ewes for September delivery in short wool at $22 per head, he reported this week. He sold 2000 mutton goats, yearlings, twos and threes, to T.J. Kirby of Moveta for April delivery out of the wool at undisclosed prices.

Jay Taylor of Amarillo has recently sold one load of steer calves weighing 400 pounds at 44 cents to Charlie Ford of Amarillo; one load of heifer calves weighing 390 at $45.05 to Ed Hudson of Oklahoma; and two loads of heifers, 540 and 490 pounds, to Wayne Barbour of Oklahoma City at $39.75

Harvey Martin, San Angelo, this week bought two loads of No. 2 skin fat lambs weighing 89 pounds from Marvin Sewell, Big Spring, at $16.75 cwt.; these delivered at Mid-West Feed Yards where they had been on feed.

Neil McGarraugh, Perryton, is reported to have sold 190 plain steers weighing 800 pounds at $15.25 to Dick Brummett of Amarillo for Feb. 25 delivery.

Raymond Hall of Sublette, Kan. Sold 94 steer yearlings weighing a little over 700 pounds at $17.50 to Earl Weisenberger of Scott City, delivered Feb. 8.

Lee Howard, Amarillo, sold 116 steers averaging 770 pounds at $130 per head and delivered them Feb. 8 to Lester Howard of Muleshoe; they had been caked on grass.

Ralph Wingfield of Nogales, Ariz., this week crossed 600 medium quality Mexican steers for use in filming a Hollywood movie, "The Proud One." He "leased" the cattle to 20th Century Fox studios for several days of filming a trail herd drive.

Wingfield, a major importer of Mexican cattle and large scale dealer and feeder, remarked that on today’s market, especially on fat cattle, leasing cattle might be better than selling them.

Kenneth Cook of Amarillo and Bud Harrell of Hugoton, Kan., sold 65 cows, described as good young cows with 15 calves on them, the balance heavy springers, at $225 each, and 10 springer cows at $180, delivered last week to Gist & Kirkland of Vega.

J.G. Anderson of Amarillo sold 100 heifer yearlings expected to weigh about 500 pounds at $23.70 for delivery this week to a local buyer.

Dub Clark, San Angelo, bought 800 yearling ewes at $16 per head and received them last week off R.L. Magill’s ranch near Alpine.

Ben Dechert of Junction this week contracted about 1200 wooled feeder lambs expected to average 85-90 pounds for March delivery at $17 from the Moody Ranch in Brewster County.

Carroll Farmer Co., San Angelo, last week bought and received 1500 August-shorn feeder lambs weighing 80-82 pounds at $16 cwt. from San Pedro Farms, Ft. Stockton.

Joe Keast of Dalhart sold 1100 steer yearlings expected to weigh 625-650 pounds at $26 for March 25-April 1 delivery to Gilbert Childers of Dalhart.

The TX Ranch at Springer, N.M., sold 130 Hereford heifers and steers weighing about 500 pounds at $28 and $31 to Ralph Shubert of Las Vegas, N.M.; also 10 yearling heifers at $180 per head to Francis Hepner of Farley, N.M.

Barney Fite of Bushland, Texas, sold 150 Holstein steers weighing 700-750 pounds at $21 to an Amarillo.

Bob Corbett, Dalhart, delivered 125 fed heifers, described as mostly choice, weighing 825 pounds, at $24.50 to a Denver packer.

John Dunn of Woodward, Okla., sold 205 fed steers described as bulk choice, weighing 1000 pounds at $26.50, delivered to Wilson & Co. out of a Texas Panhandle feedlot.

Hereford Feed Yard sold 119 steers grading bulk choice and weighing 1100 pounds at $26.50; also 202 steers weighing 1125 at the same price, 192 weighing 1025 at $26,and 246 heifers weighing 900 at $25.30.

Ducky Gallo, Dalhart, bought 160 Angus and black baldface heifers and steers weighing about 575 pounds straight across at $32 and $38 in the Perico area.

In Texas, shearing of Angora goats has begun in the southern part of the mohair producing area. Unconfirmed reports indicate scattered sales of spot hair at up to $2.75 a pound for adult, mostly in small lots. A majority of the clip is under contract at up to $2.50.

Big snows across most of the Texas Panhandle wreaked havoc upon traffic, business and school schedules, and didn’t do feedlot performance much good, either. But the snow cover is a welcome sight for the dry wheat fields.
