50 YEARS AGO

Lime and sulphur, the ingredients required for dipping sheep destined from Texas to California will be available at various Texas points, the Fort worth office of the Texas Livestock Sanitary Commission announced this week.

The office has a list of Texas suppliers. It was suggested that shippers place orders, as far in advance as possible, since it is probable the lime and sulphur may have to be shipped into Texas from chemical supply houses in other states.

Otho Drake of San Angelo bought 350 to 400 clipped yearling muttons from Busin Canon of Sanderson at 27½ cents a pound, to be weighed off the trucks in San Angelo this week.

Drake sold 194 two-year-old ewes, 134 of them with lambs, to James Ladd of Osborne, Kansas, at $45 per pair for the ewes and lambs and $35 per head for the dry ewes. These carry eight months wool.

Charlie Waller of Roswell has bought and received 2200 clipped yearling muttons weighing 90 pounds from Claude Collins at 30 cents a pound. These muttons were out of Collin’s feedlots south of Roswell.

Rector Henderson, Eldorado, sold a truckload of three-year-old dry cows to Hugh Phillips, Burnet, Texas, at $260 per head.

45 YEARS AGO

Gene Kincaid Jr., Uvalde, has sold 2000 mixed oldcrop lambs, shorn about 30 days ago, to Texas Livestock Marketing Assn. At $16 cwt. on the ewes and $14.50 cwt. on the muttons; the muttons have been delivered and the ewe lambs deliver April 15.

Charlie Lewis of Floydada, Texas, sold 190 good quality two year-old steers for May 1 delivery to Don Young of Wichita, Kan., at $17.50. Lewis recently bought and received 60 heifer and steer yearlings weighing 464 and 484 pounds, respectively, at $17 and $19 from Oscar Everett of Crosbyton, Texas.

Dick Weatherly of Panhandle, Texas, sold 100 heifers weighing 700 pounds at $16 to Earl Wilson, Amarillo, delivered the last of March.

Johnnie Wilkins of Amarillo bought 750 lightweight steer yearlings from the Birdwell ranch of Post, Texas, at $19.50 for delivery around May 1.

Clarence Martin of Friona, Texas, is reported to have sold 150 good quality light stocker steer yearlings to Ralph Collinson of Amarillo for delivery this week at $20 cwt.

D.N. Hunt of Foss, Okla., sold, to Logsdon & Ratliff of Hollis, Okla., 107 medium quality heifers at $14 and 30 at $13; they were delivered April 5.

Kelly Perschbacher of Hayden, N.M., last week received 227 heifer yearlings weighing 550 pounds at $24.50 and 35 steers weighing 575 at $27, no shrink, from Elbert Whitten, Adrian, delivered off wheat pasture. Also, from Bill Leslie of Adrian, 75 heifer yearlings weighing 560 at $24.25 and 110 steer yearlings weighing 700 at $26.25.

Henry Cone of Canyon bought 112 Hereford yearlings at $23.50; 63 Hereford steer yearlings at $25.50; and 50 mixed breed heifer yearlings at $20.50, all weighing near 500 pounds, for delivery this week from Dick Mayfield of Silverton, Texas.

Sam Elliot of Amarillo sold 300 heifer yearlings expected to weigh near 600 pounds at $23.50 for delivery the last week of May to Colorado feeders.

George Porter of Amarillo sold, to Buster Wheat of Allen, Kan., and Merle Hayter of Woodward, Okla., 200 stocker cows, about half with calves on the ground, at $200 per cow for delivery next week.

Neal Jackson, Stratford, Texas, sold 220 No. 1 Okie feeder steers weighing a little under 600 pounds at $26.50 to the Janss feedlot in Roswell, N.M.

Louis and Jim Williams of Amarillo sold 400 feeder heifers described as choice quality Herefords weighing about 650-700 pounds at $25 to an Amarillo buyer.

Triplett Feeding Co., Bovina, sold 100 steers weighing 990 pounds at $27 to Lubbock Packing Co., Lubbock, and 100 weighing 992 at $26.50 to Swift & Co., Clovis, all delivered.

The Diedrichsen feedlot at Dumas, Texas, sold 173 good and choice steers weighing 1065 pounds at $27 to a Colorado packer.

Paint Rock Feedyards, Paint Rock, sold 500 fed spring lambs weighing 92 pounds at $29.50 and 300 cleanup oldcrop lambs in No. 1 pelts at $27 f.o.b. the lot.

In Northern Colorado a number of oldcrop shorn lambs sold for $56 delivered. Two loads in No. 2 pelts went out of Wyoming’s Bighorn Basin at $55 f.o.b.

Cattle entering Texas from Mexico during March totaled 54,338 head, reports the Texas Animal Health Commission. Cattle coming in from other states during the month totaled 90,078, sheep 34,534.

Colorado Beef, Lamar, Colo.: 1356 steers, 1100 lbs., 70% choice, $53.75; 521 heifers, 1000 lbs., 70% choice, $83 in the beef.

Roswell Wool and Mohair offered and sold 475,000 pounds of 12-months wool, prices ranging from 77 cents to $1.04, bulk of the finewools from the high 80s to high 90s.

Some West Texas direct trade in spring feeder lambs has been reported at $75-75.50.

Adult mohair continues to sell around Texas at the 75 cent grease price of recent weeks. A 35,000 pound lot of spring 1991 fine adult matchings moved from the AWMA pool at 95 cents and another 35,000 pounds of spring 1990 hair made $1.

There was a staggering loss of sheep and goats in West Texas last week due to rain, sleet, snow and high winds. Some areas accumulated three inches or more.
