IT’S A MYSTERY these days what fed cattle are worth, even when they're selling. USDA's "mandatory reporting" program with its almost permanently invoked "3/60" gag rule has turned a murky pricing structure virtually opaque, the opposite of what supporters of mandatory reporting had intended. Those supporters are gnashing their teeth and yelling "robbery," while opponents counter "We told you so." Both sides are probably right.

Fat, Feeder Lamb Prices Take Tumble
Both fat and feeder lamb prices felt the affects of hot weather this week and several dollars melted away.

Domestic wool trading turned very slow the past two weeks. Demand was light and seller interest usually light at the lower price levels. A few Territory wool sales were 5-15 cents lower on a clean basis with warehouse sales 10-20 cents lower.

Feeder lambs sold $6-8 lower this week, slaughter lambs $2-4 lower, slaughter ewes steady; goats were weak. Receipts totaled 8950 head, around 60 percent slaughter ewes, five percent feeder lambs, five percent slaughter lambs and 30 percent goats.

U.S. Meat Production .4% Below A Year Ago
Total red meat production under federal inspection last week was estimated at 757.9 million pounds, 14.4 percent less than a week earlier and .4 percent more than a year ago. Cumulative meat production for the year to date was down three percent at 18.5 billion pounds.

San Saba Special Cow Sale Offers 2376 Head
Choice cows with calves and bred back showed good interest and sold strong, uniform first-calf pairs strong, others in moderate demand; open heifers mostly went as feeders. Receipts totaled 2376 head.

Lightweight feeder steers and heifers sold steady, heavyweights $1-3 higher, slaughter cows and bulls steady, pairs and bred stock cows $10-20 higher. Receipts totaled 1741 head at the two sales.

Most Junction Sheep, Goats Sell Steady
Most classes of sheep and goats sold steady. Receipts totaled 2212 head.

Llano Cattle Prices Go To Higher Levels
Feeder steers sold $2-4 higher, heifers $1-4 higher, slaughter cows $3 higher, bulls $2-4 higher. Receipts totaled 417 head.

Milano Feeder Steer, Heifer Trade Steady
Feeder steers and heifers sold steady, slaughter cows steady, bulls steady to $1 higher. Receipts totaled 944 head.

Kansas Direct Feeder Steers, Heifers Firm
Feeder steers and heifers sold steady to firm. Thunderstorms, hail and a few tornadoes moved across the state; rain amounts were 2-8 inches. Sales were confirmed on 7959 head.

Most Abilene Cattle Prices Trend Higher
Feeder steers and heifers sold $1-2 higher, slaughter cows and bulls steady to $2 higher, stock cows and pairs $10-20 higher. Receipts totaled 1368 head.

Decatur Feeder Steer, Heifer Prices Steady
Feeder steers and heifers sold steady, slaughter cows and bulls steady to $1 higher, bred stock cows $30-50 higher, pairs steady. Receipts totaled 1489 head.

Colorado City Cattle Auction Sells 719 Head
No price trend comparison was offered on receipts of 719 head.

Fredericksburg Feeder Steers Trade Higher
Feeder steers sold $2-3 higher, heifers strong, slaughter cows and bulls steady. Receipts totaled 1164 head.

Most Cuero Cattle Prices Said Higher
Feeder steers and heifers sold higher, slaughter cows and bulls $1-2 higher. Receipts totaled 1312 head.

Goldthwaite Lambs Mixed, Goats Off
Feeder lambs sold steady, slaughter lambs $3-5 lower; stock and slaughter goats $3-5 higher. Receipts totaled 3085 head.

Graham Feeder Steer, Heifer Prices Higher
Feeder steers and heifers sold $1-2 higher, slaughter cows and bulls steady, stock cows $10 higher, pairs $10-20 higher. Receipts totaled 1492 head.

Lampasas Feeder Steer, Heifer Prices Higher
Feeder steers and heifers sold $2-3 higher, slaughter cows and bulls steady. Receipts totaled 908 head.
