50 YEARS AGO

Arch Benge of San Angelo sold 268 five year-old ewes off his Mertzon ranch to J.C. McDonald and Son of San Angelo at $17 per head. These ewes averaged about 117 pounds per head.

Mid-West Feed Yards of San Angelo has bought and received a load of 67-pound lambs from Foster Sims Price of Sterling City at 27 cents per pound, and 800 ewes from John R. Scott of Mertzon at $15 per head.

Owen Brothers of San Saba recently sold 50 bred two year-old heifers to Dr. Hessler of Spencer, Iowa, at $225 per head.

Smiley Triplett of Amarillo has sold 1500 choice Hereford heifer calves to Kansas buyers for October delivery at 35 cents a pound.

Sol Weatherby of San Angelo, representing Triplett, this week loaded 60 cows and calves from Max Schneemann Sr., of Barnhart, at $300 per pair and bought two loads of light mixed calves 325 to 350 pounders, from Mrs. Vester Hughes of Mertzon at 35 cents straight across.

Triplett sold a load of fed heifers, which have been on feed in the Triplett and Pringle yards at Bovina for 135 days and weigh 850 pounds, to packers at 34½ cents per pound.

Larkin Renick of Llano and Jim Mueller of Mason have contracted 1500 calves in the Mason-Llano area at prices quoted mostly at 33 and 34 cents, with some at 35 cents. The partners have also bought some calves, weighing around 400 to 450 pounds for immediate delivery at 35 cents, and shipped these to Northern feeders.

45 YEARS AGO

LeRoy Russell of San Angelo has contracted 2500 whiteface feeder lambs, including about 1500 muttons and 1000 ewes from Edwin Mayer of Sonora for Aug. 20-25 delivery; and bought 2000 feeder lambs, including about 1000 blackfaces, from Aldwell & Johnson, Robert Lee, for immediate delivery.

About two million pounds of wool will be shown at the Wool Warehouse Co., Albuquerque, beginning July 31 at 8:30 a.m., announces C.F. Dunlap, manager. The showing will continue until buyers have seen all the wool.

Harvey Martin, San Angelo, bought and received about 300 head of fat and feeder spring lambs from George Demere, Water Valley; the feeders averaged 75 pounds and the fats 89. He also bought 1000 feeder lambs, whitefaces and blackfaces, weighing 74 pounds from the Stansberry ranch at Eden; 400 blackface lambs from George Weddell and Jafe Brewer, Water Valley; and around 500 ewes and lambs from the Richards Estate at Brady.

Whiteface lambs were bought generally at $15, blackfaces to $16.

Triplett Cattle Co., Amarillo, has bought 300-350 mixed Angus calves for immediate delivery from Wardlaw Bros., Del Rio. Also 200 calves from John Collier Jr., Fort Worth, part of them for immediate delivery and the rest for fall delivery; and 300 calves from various growers in the Brady area for Aug. 1 delivery and 350 for August 15 delivery.

Ben Sheppard, order buyer at Springfield, Mo., sold to a Miami, Okla., customer 69 purebred unrecorded Angus cows three to six years old with 53 calves weighing about 350 pounds at $11.50 cwt. for the cows and $18.50 and $20.50 for the heifer and steer calves. The cows weighed around 900 pounds and were quite thin.

40 YEARS AGO

Lea Aldwell and his associates have sold about 410 Angus steer calves to be delivered in three bunches to Singer & Brummett of Amarillo at $26.50 for the first delivery, to come this week, and $26 for other deliveries Oct. 10 and Dec. 10. Included are the Aldwell Bros. calves from Sonora, Aldwell & Johnson, Barnhart, Aldwell & Lem Johnson, Sonora, and Aldwell & Rudd, Robert Lee.

C.V. May, Amarillo, sold 180 steer yearlings expected to weigh about 800 pounds at $22 for Oct. 10-Nov. 1 delivery to an Amarillo buyer.

Bill Wood of Bushland (just west of Amarillo) bought 139 heifer calves weighing 420 and 189 steer calves weighing 440 at $23.50 and $26 for delivery this week from Ed Caskey, Amarillo.

Glenn Johnson of Dalhart is reported to have sold about 1100 Angus steer yearlings expected to weigh 775-800 pounds for Sept. 25-Oct. 25 delivery to a Dumas buyer at $23 cwt.

Tom Farr of Seymour, Texas, sold 1050 heifer yearlings two or three weeks ago for immediate delivery at $21.75; these averaged about 700 pounds. Jack Freeman of Texhoma received 500 of them and the rest went to Kansas buyers.

Total meat production under federal inspection in the United States last week was estimated at 489 million pounds, according to the Consumer and Marketing Service. This was 17 percent above the previous week and one percent above the same week last year.

Hensley & Krapff of Altus, Okla. sold 68 good Hereford steers weighing 705 pounds at $24.90 through the Amarillo Livestock Auction. The steers had been on grass supplemented with feed.

Pratt Feedlot Inc., at Pratt, Kan., sold 119 steers weighing 1050-1150 lbs. at $25; these had been on feed 140-150 days.

Shot Miller of Amarillo bought 75 good Hereford feeder steers weighing about 750 pounds at $25 from Meredith Kendrick of Groom.

Henry Cone of Canyon sold a load of good Hereford heifers weighing 450 pounds at $112.50 per head to Jim Aldridge of Dimmitt.

Jim Hickam of Springer, N.M., bought 130 choice Hereford heifer and steer calves weighing about 385 pounds at $26 and $28 from W.M. Crawford, Springer.

All horses in Texas have been ordered quarantined to premises as Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis, called "VEE" for short, threatens to spread outward from the lower Rio Grande Valley. It is a form of sleeping sickness.

Texas drylot sheep feeders having capacity for 2000 or more had 91,000 sheep and lambs on feed for slaughter July 1, the Texas Crop and Livestock Reporting Service said. That was 21 percent more than the same date a year ago and 10 percent above last month.

Wyoming reported choice and fancy feeder lambs weighing 95-100 pounds at $57-58. Midwestern terminals quoted feeders within a broad range $50-60.

In Oregon around 1000 lambs weighing 100-125 pounds went direct to slaughter at $52 and 80-105 pound feeders were $45.

A total of 5500 ewes crossed into Mexico last week through the Texas ports. There have been 116,000 ewes exported so far this year, down 17 percent from 139,000 head for the same period last year.

Fleshy slaughter ewes in San Angelo brought $36-49, similar ewes at Midwest markets $25-34.50. Billings sold ewes from $21 to $30.50.

USDA counted 13,900 head of feeder cattle selling direct off Colorado range.

__________

San Angelo’s monthly special calf and yearling sale attracted more than 7000 head of mostly calves and reported a firm to $1 higher market on steers, $1-2 higher on heifers.

Texas and Western Oklahoma direct feeder cattle trading reported by USDA totaled 17,700 head.
