Pokin' Fun
Most people would think that legal battles are
serious enough that they would be completely devoid of humor.
However, one notable exception has come to my attention. |

Shortgrass Country
From the ranch to Cloudcroft, New Mexico, the
elevation ascends from 2550 feet to 9000 feet above sea level.
Ground travel time runs seven to eight hours. The time change
from Mountain to Central shows a one-hour loss. |

On The Edge Of
Common Sense
Ron is one of those good ranchers who has an
affinity for machinery. The new bulldozer was his proudest
possession. The monsoon rains had turned his northern Mexico
ranch as green as Indiana. But they had also washed out a few
pasture roads. |

As
I See It ...
We're just like Disneyland around here. We have a
parade or two every day. It's semi-impressive when all the
critters show up for our daily muster and march to the
mailbox. With two horses, three dogs and two cats in formation
behind me, I feel like I should be waving a toilet plunger or
some other baton-like implement. |

Its The Pitts
Some towns have become tourist hotspots, if only for
one day a year, because of their names. On Valentine's Day the
post offices at Loving, New Mexico and Valentine, Nebraska do
a larger volume of business than usual with folks wanting
their love letters postmarked from those booming metropoli. |

Wildlife
By Design
With dove season about over, the countdown to the
"real" bird hunting season begins (quail, of
course!). According to Texas Parks and Wildlife's annual quail
hunting forecasts it's going to be a mixed bag. TPWD
biologists use 20-mile roadside counts in August to assess
quail trends at the "ecological region" level. |

When you get my age, you tend to use your computer to

A Time of Dying ... The sun set sufferingly slow last
evening, reluctant to let the first of the autumnal days slip
by. As dusk fell into night, early points of light appeared in
the sky and the new chill of the evening removed any doubt the
season of dying had begun. |
