50 YEARS AGO
Kelly Hartley of Centralia, Oklahoma, this week bought from Earl
Huffman of San Angelo 115 plain steers which averaged slightly over
400 pounds at 36 cents a pound, with a 10 percent cut at 34 cents.
Hartley also bought from Huffman 45 heifers in the same bunch at 34
cents a pound.

George Jones of San Angelo Wednesday received the Randy Chandler
mutton lambs, about 2000 head at 30 cents a pound.

W.J. Ausmussen of Agar, Sough Dakota, bought through the San Angelo
Livestock Auction Company, 1095 mutton lambs. These included 600 lambs
averaging 56 pounds from Sparks Boatright at $28.25.
Jack Shaw of Fort Worth bought at the same sale, 530 yearling
muttons consigned by Bob Owens of Fort Stockton at 24 cents a pound.

Morris Freeman of Texhoma, Oklahoma, has bought, from John Birdwell
of Lubbock, 600 steer yearlings for November 1 delivery at $35.50 cwt.
These will load at Muleshoe, Texas, and are expected to weigh around
600 pounds.

Harvey Martin of San Angelo last week sold to J.N. Jasaway, a
Kansas buyer, 223 Angus cows at $250 per head. These are bred to calve
in November and are some older cows which Martin recently bought from
Sol Mayer of San Angelo.

If pulled wool production continues at the rate prevailing up to
September, the total this year will set a new low record. It would
amount to only 27 million pounds compared to last year’s tonnage of
32 million pounds, which was the lowest on record.

Ed Mayfield of Sonora and A.E. Neal of San Angelo recently sold 480
two year-old medium to good quality steers to Wieller and Wieller of
South St. Paul at 30 cents; these averaged 780 pounds and were loaded
at Timber Lake, South Dakota. Mayfield and Neal have also sold 124
heifer yearlings recently at $32.50.

W.G. Alexander of Laverne, Okla., bought from Ira Sally of Liberal,
Kan., 150 steer calves weighing about 300 pounds at $20 for Oct. 15
delivery at Kit Carson, Colo.; these are to be trucked 15 miles and
weighed straight.

Mrs. J.J. Ray and Clyde Hudson of Goodnight, Texas, are reported to
have sold 137 mixed calves weighing 436 pounds at $19 straight to
Raymond Brandenburg of Rochelle, Ill., delivered Sept. 28.

J.T. Trew, Alanreed, Texas, sold 135 steer yearlings averaging 797
pounds at $17 and delivered them Sept. 28 to Wallace Locke of
Amarillo; they were weighed at the ranch with three percent shrink.

Ralph Queen of Alamosa, Colo., sold 370 choice quality yearling
steers weighing 600-625 pounds at $18.125 (splitting the difference
between $18 and $18.25) to A.G. Wood of California for Oct. 10
delivery at the ranch with three percent shrink.

W.H. Eubank, Hereford, Texas, sold 110 good young cows, all
springers except seven with small calves, at $92.50 per head to S.N.
Fahey of Oakdale, Calif., for delivery this week. These cows are
estimated to average about 1000 pounds.

Ed Baldridge of Clovis, N.M., sold 307 steer yearlings, Herefords
and Angus expected to weigh around 675 pounds, at $23 for delivery
this week to a Kansas buyer.

C.T. Wagnon, Cheyenne, Okla., sold 125 mixed calves weighing
425-450 pounds at $26 and $28 for delivery this week to Puckett Bros.,
Sayre, Okla.

Bill O’Laughlin of Miami, Texas, sold, off his ranch at Rye,
Colo., 500 short yearling steers weighing 555 pounds at $23.50 and
delivered them last week to Charlie Ford of Amarillo.

George and Gary Simms of Panhandle, Texas, sold 874 steers
described as just good Herefords weighing 659 pounds at $22.50 and
delivered them last week to an Amarillo buyer; also 295 plain quality
Mexican steers weighing 687 at $18.50. Simms & Rushner sold 296
plain Mississippi steers weighing 605 at $20.50, also delivered last
week to the same buyer.

West Texas wool trade in the past week was dull. Only limited lots
of fall wool were moved at 35 to 45 cents, including a little last
week in San Angelo at 42½ to 45 cents.
Mohair trade is also at a standstill. Some buyers say they would
pay 81½ cents on fall adult, but warehousemen say little is available
at that price.

The Australian meat board announced that a total of 27,182,400
pounds of beef, 4,233,600 pounds of mutton, 293,440 pounds of lamb and
31,360 pounds of offals will be shipped to the U.S. and Canada.

Commercial slaughtering plants in Texas produced 149.2 million
pounds of red meat during August this year, or 13 percent more than a
year earlier, the USDA reports. Production of red meat during the
first eight months this year totaled 1094.4 million pounds. Cattle
slaughter in August totaled 220,000 head, 21,000 more than in 1965.
