Choice gleanings
from 45-plus years of Unregistered Bull
Since the end of World War II, according to the
Department of Commerce, the U.S. has shipped something like
$55 billion to foreign countries to help them get back on
their feet and to keep peace in the world. |

Pokin' Fun
In Mississippi, I recently met a colorful character
named Jean (pronounced almost like John) Budreaux. When I
asked what a Cajun fellow was doing in Mississippi, he
casually explained that it happened years ago quite by
accident. A man with a peg leg crossed over from Louisiana
and Jean's ancestors followed him, thinking they were
following crawfish holes. |

Took 20 years of using one of the respected travel
guides to discover the publisher charges the restaurants and
lodgings to be listed in the book. Listings, I was slow to
learn, were mighty scarce in towns where innkeepers balked at
paying a fee, or the better hamburger and chili joints
preferred tacking a sign on a fencepost to spending a fancy
price for a slot in a travel book. |

As
I See It ...
And then there were none. It was the slow march of
time that did it. All perfectly normal and natural, but we
looked around one day and realized we had no dogs in the yard. |

Lee Pitts
Its The Pitts
America's voice has been hushed for several months this
past year, and the silence has been deafening. Paul Harvey
caught a virus that affected his speech, and since then we've
all felt a little under the weather. It was his vocal chords
that were swollen, but it was we, his loyal listeners, who got
one big collective lump in our throats when we paused to
realize how much he has meant to us these past 50 years.
(Actually, it's been much longer, as Mr. Harvey started as a
broadcaster at age 14, but as a common courtesy we'll just
leave it at 50 years.) |

Ruben Cantu, regional director for Texas Parks and
Wildlife Department here in San Angelo, recently queried some
of his associates for their take on a soul-searching topic.
Seems Cantu has been asked to give a paper at the Texas
Chapter of The Wildlife Society's annual meeting next February
in Corpus Christi on the topic of "Why we hunt." |

The
Computer& The Cowboy
Thank goodness for computer access to the Internet in
libraries. I would like to admit that I could go for a few
days without having access, but I have come to depend on it
for keeping in touch with my son in Japan, my Aggie daughter
who is looking for a job after an August graduation, and at
the end of the month I like to check on my investments. Last
Thursday my wife had to be at a big Centennial Celebration at
Texas Woman’s University in Denton. We got up so early I
didn’t have a chance to check my E-mail or find out what the
end of the month balance was in some funds. |
