THE WINNER in the matched calf roping part of last weekend's San Angelo Roping Fiesta was Cody Ohl, Stephenville, top. Ohl bested an error-plagued Fred Whitfield, Hockley, bottom, by an uncharacteristically wide margin of more than 52 seconds on 12 head. Whitfield's total time included a two-looper and a three-looper.

Ohl Beats Whitfield In Matched
Calf Roping At San Angelo Fiesta

SAN ANGELO — Saturday was Cody Ohl's day. The Stephenville cowboy won both the matched calf roping and the invitational jackpot in Saturday's portion of the San Angelo Roping Fiesta.

Ohl's opponent in the match, Fred Whitfield of Hockley, was second in both events but by wildly differing margins. Whitfield trailed Ohl in the three-head jackpot by just five one-hundredths of a second, 27.4 seconds total against 27.35 for Ohl. The match was a different story.

If there were such a thing as a third, fourth or 10th place in a match, Whitfield would have claimed it. Two-looping one calf and three-looping another cost him so much time that he trailed Ohl in the 12-head match by more than 52 seconds.

Third in the jackpot behind Ohl and Whitfield was Josh Crow, Lovington, N.M., with 30.5 seconds, followed by Bubba Paschal, Rose City, Texas, with 31.02.

Sunday's invitational steer roping winner was Trevor Brazile, Krum, with 53.18 seconds on four head. Second place went to Guy Allen, Santa Anna, with 60.22 seconds. J.B. Whatley, Gardendale, was third with 61.35.
