50 YEARS AGO

Harvey Martin of San Angelo bought 89 cows and 79 mixed calves from J.H. Fortner of Marfa at 31 cents a pound for the calves and 21 cents for the cows. There were "medium quality" cattle; the calves averaged 317 pounds and the cows around 750 pounds.

Nelson Ainsworth of Milnesand, New Mexico, recently sold 100 head of three and four year-old cows to Ernest Knott of Clovis at $250 per head.

Triplett Cattle Company of Amarillo has contracted 200 good quality steer yearlings from Oliver McDade of Clayton, New Mexico, for October delivery at $31.75 cwt. This is the first fall cattle contract drawn by Triplett this year.

Jeff Davis of Sterling City has bought 654 feeder mutton lambs weighing about 85 pounds from W.N. and L.R. Reed, also of Sterling city, at $28 cwt.; 634 head averaging 73 pounds from Q.C. Walker of San Angelo at the same price; and 264 weighing 87 pounds from Carson Miles of San Angelo at $27.50. These lambs, all in full wool, were shipped to feedlots at Emporia, Kansas.

Bryan Hunt of Sonora last week sold 720 feeder mutton lambs in the wool to Vestel Askew, buyer for Armour and Company, at $27.50 cwt. These averaged 82½ pounds pay weight.

A record top price for Southeastern New Mexico Hereford Association sales was established in the twenty-first annual auction here last week when Lamplighter 149th, a two year-old bull consigned by W.A. Anderson of Lovington sold to John Fanning of Artesia at $3100.

"All yearlings continue to show heavy feeding losses, and most fed lambs selling now at $29.50 to $30.50 cost $33 to $35 and better laid down in Corn Belt feedlots last fall," the USDA commented a few days ago in discussing the Chicago market.

45 YEARS AGO

Max Crawford and Bob Nelson of Lincoln, Kan., have bought about 1000 steers from Clay Murphy, Refugio, Texas, for April delivery; these steers are located on the Weiss Ranch near Beeville, Texas, and were sold through George E. Light Jr., Cotulla.

Arthur Letts of Amarillo bought 300 steers estimated to weigh about 800 pounds from Hal Cooper of Fort Supply, Okla., at $18 with a 10 percent cut at $1 less, for Feb. 1-15 delivery.

Henry Cone of Canyon, Texas, bought two loads of mixed calves at $17 for the heifers, averaging 462 pounds, from Harry Blair of Quitaque and received them last weekend.

Ab Wright of Amarillo bought one load of choice quality Angus steers weighing about 525 pounds at $19.50 from J.C. Thomas of Plainview, to be weighed straight in Amarillo Feb. 2.

W.R. Patterson of Dalhart sold 50 steers weighing 643 pounds at $17.25 and delivered them Jan. 24 to Carl Sandburg, buying for Colorado Livestock Commission Co., Denver.

J.L. Fuqua of Fort Morgan, Colo., is reported to have bought 700 heifer yearlings weighing 600-700 pounds in the Boise City, Okla., area at $23-23.50 for March 15-20 delivery; these are described as good quality Hereford and Angus.

Elmer Rigoni of Roy, N.M., last week bought 600 plain Mexican crossbred steers, yearlings and twos, expected to weigh over 400 pounds for April delivery at $21 cwt. from Jess Burner of El Paso. Rigoni will summer these on his ranch near Roy.

L.A. Hudson of Groom, Texas, bought 350 steer yearlings described as "southern mixed breeds" weighing 600 to 800 pounds at $19 to $23 for March 1-15 delivery from George Esche of Groom.

Floyd Brown of Adrian, Texas, bought 187 cows, threes to fives, with 55 calves on them, at $225 per cow from John McCoy & Son, Tucumcari, N.M., for delivery this week.

Mid-West Feed Yards, San Angelo, last weekend sold two loads of fed lambs, shorn about 30 days, at $14.50; also a couple of loads of feeders at $15-15.25 for those in wool and $14 for No. 1 skin shorn feeders.

F. Jake Hess of McLean, Texas, was named president of the Panhandle Hereford Breeders Assn. at the annual meeting during the Amarillo Fat Stock Show.

Cluck Cattle Co. of Dimmitt sold 285 steers weighing 985 pounds and grading about 75 percent choice at $25 to a Fort Worth packer.

Harold Gatens of Amarillo sold 500 No. 1 Okie steers weighing 500 pounds at $26.50 to a Colorado buyer.

Weldon Hager of Canyon sold 90 No. 1 Okie steers weighing 585 pounds at $25 to an Amarillo buyer. They were weighed straight after a 45-mile haul.

In New Mexico, Sterett Hawes of Springer has leased his ranch again to Jess Burner of El Paso at nine cents a pound for the gain; Burner will put 1200-1500 lightweight Mexican steers on this country.

Paint Rock Wool Warehouse sold 25,000 pounds of lamb wool at 40 cents per pound. W.F. Houston, co-owner of the firm, said the wool had been shorn from lambs which came from the San Saba area and contained lots of clover burrs.

Boyd Colbert, Clovis, bought in that area 250 No. 1 Okie heifers weighing about 600 pounds at $33.50 and 146 choice Hereford steers weighing 528 at $42.50 delivered.
