Anti-Grazing Book
Due Out This Summer
WASHINGTON — A book, "Welfare Ranching: The Subsidized
Destruction of the American West," published by the National
Public Lands Grazing Campaign, is expected out this summer.
The National Public Lands Grazing Campaign, composed of radical
environmentalists, is the same group that wants to purchase grazing
permits from ranchers and retire them. That program was introduced
last fall at a meeting of environmental activists called RangeNet.
More than 75 groups have endorsed the plan to end livestock grazing
on federal lands in the West.
Although special legislation is needed to carry out the program,
letters have been sent to some 25,000 grazing permittees asking for
their support.
The NPLGC claims that some ranchers have already relinquished their
grazing permits in exchange for compensation from third parties.
The subject was a hot topic at the New Mexico Cattle Growers
Association convention in December.
