50 YEARS AGO

Charlie Waller of Roswell has sold around 60,000 pounds of wool off feedlot lambs, shorn last fall and winter, at 50 cents per pound to Max O. Riley of Roswell, representing Edgehill-Lukens Company.

Jim Nail of Albany is reported to have sold 750 steer and heifer yearlings weighing 500 to 525 pounds at $34 and $36 for heifers and steers, respectively, to Irving Ludlow of Longmont, Colorado, for immediate delivery.

Gerald Poe of San Angelo last week bought two carloads of steer yearlings weighing around 400 pounds at 36 cents a pound from Jess Stephens of Eden; these were shipped to California. Poe also bought one load of young cows with small calves at Eden at $275 a pair; one load of good aged Hereford cows and calves from W.J. Bean of Brady at $250 a pair, and 63 Brahamn and plain cows with 46 calves on them from Hubert Williams of Sterling City at $200 each.

A.S. Baker of San Angelo, wool buyer representing the Deering-Anderson Company, recently purchased a total of about 120,000 pounds of eight-months wool, with a small tonnage of 12-months wool, at 51 to 60 cents per pound from Wool Growers Central Storage Company in San Angelo and West Texas Wool and Mohair Company in Mertzon.

J.C. Bell of Amarillo sold 23 seven year-old springer cows at $217.50 to Sid Williams of Morton, Texas, for immediate delivery.

E.B. Fullingem of Petersburg, Texas, is reported to have sold 35 choice Angus cows, five year-olds, with 250-pound calves on them, at $175 per pair to Howard Alford of Lubbock.

G.W. Brumley of Hereford sold 125 steers fed 180 days and weighing 1147 pounds at $23 and delivered them April 20 to Swift & Co., Fort Worth.

Elton Green and J.D. Hance of Clovis, N.M., bought 1216 good to choice mixed calves at $20.50 for the heifers, weighing 362 pounds, and $23 for the steers, weighing 379 pounds, delivered April 15 at Marfa, Texas, from Russell Center of San Antonio.

A.O. Bales of Texline bought 60 mixed breed shortfed steers weighing 645 pounds at $18.50, out of feedlots at Texline, delivered April 19, from John Clark of Oklahoma City.

Phil Lyons of Clovis sold 120 good quality stocker cows, 92 with calves on them and the balance springers, at $150 each for 100 head and $145 for 20 head, delivered last week to an out-of-state buyer.

W.H. Martin of San Angelo this week received 1200 fresh shorn stocker oldcrop mutton lambs from DeWolf & West of San Angelo at $11.50 cwt; these weighed 85 pounds.

Lee Merrill of Clovis, N.M., this week sold 85 choice heifers, expected to weigh 525-550 pounds, for delivery right away to Midwestern feeders at $24.65 cwt. These have been started on feed and will deliver from Merrill’s lots.

Triplett Feeding Co. of Bovina, Texas, sold 250 fed heifers weighing 850 pounds at $24.25 to Dick Roberts of Garden City, Kan.; 300 crossbred steers weighing around 1000 pounds to Modern Meat Co., Norwalk, Calif. at $23; and 100 heifers weighing 800 pounds at $24 to Peyton Packing Co., El Paso.

N.C. Crites of Clayton, N.M., this week bought 400 heifer yearlings from Webb & Eberhardt of Garden City, Kan. at $23.50 on the heavy end, about 120 head weighing 682 pounds, and $24.50 on the balance weighing 590 pounds.

Maurice Fausett and his son Melvin of Worland, Wyo., this week consummated purchase of San Angelo Livestock Auction Co. The auction has been closed for several weeks.

Maurice Fausett said Wednesday that the new name and opening date of the auction will be announced shortly. He expects opening sales to be held during the first or second week of May.

The Australian Meat Board announced ship sailings to United States and Canadian destinations with totals of 11,170,880 pounds of beef, 3,967,000 pounds of mutton and 443,520 pounds of lamb.

Andy Smith of San Angelo sold 159 aged Rambouillet ewes at $8.10 per head and 43 fancy crossbred 88 pound lambs off the ewes at $27 cwt. and delivered them to Mid-West Feed Yards in San Angelo.

Texas Livestock Marketing Assn., Fort Worth, bought 150 good Hereford heifer yearlings weighing about 550 pounds at $23.50 in the Amarillo area.

Wool Growers Central Storage Co., San Angelo, sold about 60,000 pounds of 12-months wool at 48-53 cents per pound.

Several sales of oldcrop fat lambs at $21-22 cwt. were made in West Texas. A feeder commented, "They’re back up where they will break even. That’s the best news I’ve had in some time."

Boyd Colbert, Clovis, bought in that area 162 Hereford, Angus and black baldface steers weighing 528 pounds at $39.

Stocker ewes with lambs weighing up to 35 pounds brought $26-36 per head in San Angelo. Scattered sales of yearling ewes were reported at $70-75 per head out of the wool.

Total red meat supplies in freezers increased eight percent from February, says the National Agricultural Statistics Service, but were down slightly from March 1996. Beef in coolers at 292,924 million pounds was up 16 percent from a month earlier but 12 percent below March 1996.

All sheep and lambs in the U.S. on April 1 were down seven percent from a year earlier at 8.72 million head. Total breeding sheep and lambs was down five percent at 5.67 million head.
