There is so much talk today about Social Security
going broke, developing your own tax-sheltered program, and
opening up an IRA, but nobody is talking about when you know
it's time to retire. |

On one of my walks last week in Mertzon, a
hard-working welder stopped to talk. He was hunting for the
high school student who had been helping him weld on a tough
job under the direct summer sun. All I could tell him was that
if he wanted to give the lad a scare, just say "ranch
work." |

On The Edge Of
Common Sense
Across the West this summer, thousands of people
heard the words, "Take your belongings and go."
Drouth, lightning, careless humans, arsonists and
long-standing unnatural conservation policies combined to
create a living inferno of our nation’s forests and
grasslands. |

Its The Pitts
It has come to my attention that some folks are
registering brands who have no intention of ever putting their
mark on bovines. They plan on using their new irons on steaks,
wet concrete and works of art. I would remind these people
that a brand is NOT a coat of arms, and there is a certain
ritual that one must go through before you are allowed to
apply your brand to anything. This ritual is known as a
branding. |

July 4 has a new meaning this year. After 9/11 we have
become much more patriotic. |
