summer meeting here on what direction to take with regard to the
livestock board's looming crisis.

Hopes To Know Checkoff Fate Soon
A spokesman for the New Mexico Beef Council says they hope
to know by July 5 whether an order by a federal judge in South Dakota
stopping the collection of beef checkoff money will be stayed.

A U.S. Senator from Wyoming wants the American public to pay
for protecting endangered plants and wildlife.
USDA, DOI Receive
Emergency Funds To Help With Wildfires
The U.S. Department of Agriculture and U.S. Department of
the Interior will receive additional emergency funds for wildfire
suppression and emergency rehabilitation of burned lands. The Office
of Management and Budget has released a total of $120 million — $66
million to USDA and $54 million to DOI.

for the Texas Cattle Feeders Association's meeting in Ruidoso, N.M.,

Find Weakness Before Holiday Lull
Feeder and stocker cattle prices were steady to weak in most
areas of the country last week, except for the Southeast which traded
steady to $2 lower.
Fed Cattle Lower Last
Week, Kill Large, Beef Demand Good
Direct slaughter cattle traded $1 lower last week despite
good packer demand as kills remain above 700,000 head per week. Beef
demand remains good and prices traded mostly steady for the week.
Superior Livestock Video
Sale Offering Totals 138,000 Cattle
Superior Livestock Auction offered more than 138,000 feeder
cattle and bred stock cows in their 14th annual Weekend in the Rockies
auction. Feeder steers and heifers sold steady to $2 higher, though
prices were $20-22 below the same sale a year ago. Consignments were
from 26 states.
Domestic Wool Slow, Aussie
Wools Lower
Domestic wool trading remains slow as the season comes to a
close in most areas. Demand was moderate, the undertone steady.
Angelo Cattle Sell Steady
Last Week
All classes of cattle sold steady last week. Receipts
totaled 2000 head, about 65 percent feeders, 25 percent slaughter cows
and bulls and 10 percent stock cows and pairs.
Goldthwaite Lambs Steady,
Goats Rise
Slaughter lambs sold steady, goat classes $5-10 higher.
Receipts totaled 2886 head.
Graham Feeder Cattle Show
Slight Strength
Feeder steers and heifers sold steady to $1 higher, the
advance on weights under 500 pounds, slaughter cows and bulls steady,
stock cows and pairs steady. Receipts totaled 818 head.
Hamilton Nanny Goats
Higher, Others Steady
Nanny goats sold higher, other sheep and goat classes steady
on receipts of 1418 head.
Lometa Sheep, Goats
Called Mostly Steady
Most sheep and goats sold steady on receipts of 1794 head.
Fredericksburg Feeder
Steers, Heifers Mixed
Lightweight feeder steers were $2-3 higher, heavyweights
steady, heifers steady, slaughter cows and bulls steady. Receipts
totaled 1783 head.
Colorado City Feeder
Cattle Prices Steady
Feeder steers and heifers sold mostly steady, slaughter cows
steady to $1 lower, bulls steady, stock cows $25 higher, pairs $50
higher. Receipts totaled 1213 head.
Cuero Feeder Steers,
Heifers Sell Mixed
Feeder steers sold steady to lower, heifers steady to
higher, slaughter cows $1-2 lower. Receipts totaled 1874 head.
U.S. Meat Production 6.9%
Above A Year Ago
Total red meat production under federal inspection last week
was estimated at 928.9 million pounds, 1.1 percent more than a week
ago and 6.9 percent more than a year ago. Cumulative meat production
for the year to date was up 3.1 percent at 22.66 billion pounds.
San Saba, Brownwood,
Mason Feeders Steady
Yearling feeder steers, and heifers, sold steady last week
in Mason, Brownwood and San Saba, calves steady to $2 lower, slaughter
cows steady, bulls $1-2 lower, bred stock cows and pairs strong.
Receipts totaled 2129 head at the three sales.
Kansas Direct Feeder
Steers, Heifers Weak
Feeder steers sold mostly steady last week in Kansas direct
trade, some weakness noted, heifers weak on a light test. Sales were
confirmed on 15,757 head. Temperatures ranged 95-100 degrees with
little moisture. The wheat harvest is basically over south of I-80,
yields varying from six to 40 bushels in Western Kansas.
