This is the season for tornadoes, drouth,
torrential rains and other natural disasters, like June
weddings ... followed by Fourth of July fireworks. |

Sheep numbers are so few nowadays that unloading at
the scales is a private affair. One San Angelo terminal,
Mid-West Feed Yards, once had lines of a dozen trucks waiting
to back into the loading chute. Those of us waiting to weigh
our lambs were willing to help other shippers unload to reduce
the lost time and shrink of our delicate product. |

The lineup included the cow, the blue teal, the
confinement hog, the Labrador retriever and the clam.
"One of these suspects is guilty of runaway bacterial

I am not what you'd call a real "cat person."
I'm not ashamed to admit that I have never owned a feline, as
if that's possible anyway. It's been my experience that people
don't own cats but rather the cats own them. |

Last month I was honored to receive the Sam Beasom
Leader in Conservation Award from the Texas Wildlife
Association. As I proceeded toward the podium to receive the
recognition, a quote from Sir Isaac Newton popped into my
mind: "If I have seen further than others, it is because
I am standing on the shoulders of giants." As my former
boss Dr. Don Steinbach made the presentation, I considered
myself truly blessed. To have received an award in memory of
one of my giants, and to have another of my giants make the
presentation. |

Maybe free enterprise is still alive and well. In a
recent survey of readers of a computer magazine, I was
surprised to find that while Dell had the most favorable
response for desktop computers, so-called locally built
computers had almost as good a rating. |
