50 YEARS AGO

Otho Drake of San Angelo last Thursday sold, for Munroe Arrott of Miles, 780 yearling ewes to John Lincoln of Clovis, New Mexico, at $15 each. Drake also sold 1000 whiteface lambs at Sonora at 18 cents for shipment north. He also sold, from Frank Corder of Brady, 600 lambs at 18 cents a pound.

Conn Johnson of Melvin has contracted around 3000 whiteface mixed lambs for September 1 to October 1 delivery in the Eden area at 20 cents a pound straight across. Contracts include around 1000 from Leland Hutchison and small bunches from Jim Daniel, Lee Roy Pfluger, Fred hall and Wesley Burk. The lambs, to be delivered at buyer’s option anytime in September, are expected to weigh around 60 pounds. Johnson contracted the lambs through C.V. "Rip" Hobdy, Eden commission agent.

Bob Hurt of San Angelo has recently shipped, and bought for early delivery, several thousand lambs from the Del Rio area, mostly at $19.50-20.50 per hundred pounds. Included were 1500 head from the Peterson ranch weighing 72 pounds; 800 from the Orr ranch weighing 68 pounds; 1200 from the Allison ranch weighing 75 pounds; and 1500 from Pete Monzingo, delivered at Pumpville, weighing 57 pounds.

Hurt also bought for delivery soon, 5000 lambs from the Noelke Estate at Rankin and 2000 from Clyde Sellers Jr., of Del Rio.

E.D. Webster and Sons of San Angelo have bought and received 90 mixed calves from Foster Conger and Robert Foster of Sterling City at 30 cents a pound straight across. The calves delivered last Sunday and weighed 430 pounds.

Gale Eastman of Amarillo bought and this week received 155 Angus steer calves from Phillips and Mayer of San Angelo at 32 cents a pound. The calves weighed 436 pounds pay weight and loaded Monday at Eldorado.

Dick Weatherly of Panhandle, Texas, sold 143 heifer yearlings weighing 542 pounds and delivered them July 18 at $20.10 to Iowa feeders.

Manuel Naranjo, Clayton, N.M., is reported to have sold 100 steer yearlings for Oct. 1-20 delivery at $21 to Joe Haskell Cattle Co., Wichita, Kan.

Tom White of Clovis is reported to have sold 200 steer yearlings weighing 590 pounds at $19, delivered July 18, to D&S Cattle Co., Genoa, Ill.; these were located near Navasota, Texas.

M.H. and Jack Freeman, Texhoma, Okla., this week delivered three loads of fed heifers weighing around 900 pounds at $23.50 to Lincoln Packing Co., Pueblo, Colo.

Outstanding 4-H feeders of the Highland Hereford territory were honored with a steak fry and cash awards recently when the Highland Hereford Assn. entertained the kids at the Pete Kennedy Ranch between Alpine and Fort Davis. Honorees and their home counties are: Bub Kelly, Jeff Davis; Gibby Grubb, Jeff Davis; Bailey Wheeless, Presidio; Janet Grubb, Jeff Davis; Martha Anne Gearhart, Jeff Davis; Dodie Tate, Brewster; Joe Gallego III, Reeves; Dennis Turnbough, Reeves. James Everett was also a winning exhibitor.

40 YEARS AGO

Artie Watkins, Dalhart, sold 120 mixed breed feeder heifers expected to weigh 625 at $22.50 for Aug. 15 delivery to the Gooch feedyard in Dalhart.

Bob Greer, San Angelo, sold 67 Angus calves expected to weigh 450-475 pounds at $27 and $29 for Aug. 15 delivery to a local buyer.

J.C. (Hap) Clower of Wichita Falls this week sold 1440 Mexican steers for Sept. 25 delivery off Kansas bluestem to Sheftel Bros., Los Angeles, Calif. About 750 of these are corriente type which will go at $18.30, weighed straight at 1 p.m. after a 10-mile drive; 450 are Herefords expected to weigh about 800 at $21.25 with same delivery conditions; and 230 are Okie type dehorned steers at $19, to be driven a mile and weighed straight at 1 p.m. after a dry stand from early morning.

Frost Livestock Co., Fountain, Colo., recently sold 1400 Hereford heifer and steer yearlings at $22.50 and $24 to Reynolds Cattle Co., Longmont, Colo. The heifers are to be delivered Oct. 15 and are expected to weigh about 650 pounds; the steers go Sept. 1 and are expected to average about 675. These yearlings were raised by Mark Elkins of Grants, N.M. Frost is a repeat buyer of the Elkins cattle, and Reynolds is a repeat buyer of the Frost cattle.

"Nobody makes any money on the cattle, but we all have the use of them for a while," says Jon Frost.

Charlie Hoover of Hereford sold 108 steer yearlings weighing 650-700 at $25 for delivery this week to Leo Singer of Amarillo.

Pratt Feedlot Inc., Pratt, Kan., sold 85 steers weighing 1200 pounds and 165 weighing 1100, grading 85-90 percent choice, at $26.60 and 193 similar steers weighing 1112 pounds at $26.50 to Kansas packers.

Diedrichsen & Son Feedlot, Dumas, sold 170 heifers weighing 850 pounds and 290 heifers weighing 760 pounds, all grading 60 percent choice at $25.50 to a Texas packer.

A.J. Fires of Wellington, Texas, sold 1050 No. 1 Okie steers weighing 750 pounds at $25.50 to a Colorado buyer.

Ernest Langenegger & Sons of Hagerman, N.M., sold 304 steers weighing 1106 pounds, grading 70 percent choice, at $26 to a Texas packer.

Joe Bob James, Boise City, Olka., sold 2400 Hereford, Angus and black baldface steers being summered near Raton, N.M., weighing about 650 pounds at $42.

John Hendricks, LaSalle, Colo., contracted to sell 1000-1200 fat lambs for August out of feedlots at $34 delivered to Denver; the lambs originated in Idaho.

Joe Torres, Eagle Nest, sold 200 Hereford heifers and steers weighing about 400 and 425 pounds at $45 and $48 to a Colorado buyer.

Don Driggers, Santa Rosa, N.M., sold 650 Hereford heifer and steer calves weighing 425 and 475 pounds, respectively, at $42 and $47 to an out of state buyer.

Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter on July 1 in the 23 major feeding states totaled 9,750,000 head. This is three percent below a year ago but 14 percent above two years ago.

Ralph Britten, Groom, bought in the Cheyenne, Okla. area 220 No. 1 Okie steers weighing 660 pounds at $38.50.

The Billings, Mont. auction had feeder lambs steady at $49-51.50, fat lambs $1-2 lower at $50-51.75, a few to $52.25.

Dave Scott, representing United Livestock, Sealy, sold to a Central Texas buyer one load of No. 1 crossbred steers weighing 460 pounds at $40.74.

20 YEARS AGO

Fed heifers are moving from South Texas feedlots to Mexico again. Leon Miller, owner of Alta Verde Industries, Eagle Pass, reports at least five feeding firms including his own have been selling several thousand good and choice heifers, basically seven-weight cattle, each week to Banco Rural, the official Mexican agency responsible for payment on the heifers.

Glen Moss, Bellevue, sold to a Wichita Falls buyer two potloads of mixed breed steers weighing 750 pounds at 463.

Jarboe-Lackey Feedlot, Parsons, Kan.: 452 steers, 1025-1030 lbs., 50% choice, $104 in the beef; 101 heifers, 975 lbs., 50% choice, $101 in the beef.

Ty Jones Cattle Co., Canyon, bought in the Texas Panhandle 250 No. 1 steers weighing 700 pounds at $62.50.

B&N Ranch and Bill Reed, Parsons, Kan., sold to a Nebraska buyer for Sept. 10-20 delivery off summer grass on the Chapman-Barnard Ranch in Osage County, Okla., 1800 No. 1 Okie steers expected to weigh 800-850 pounds at $64.50.

Joe Bob James, Boise City, Okla., sold 1315 steer yearlings expected to average about 800 pounds for Oct. 1 delivery at $72. These include 775 head located near Grenville, N.M., and 540 at Boise City.

Bill Porter, Bowling Green, Ky., sold on a delivered basis one load of Holstein steers and bulls weighing 350 pounds at $89 and a load weighing 400 at $85 to Kansas; one load of No. 1-plus tigerstripe heifers weighing 415-425 pounds, delivered to South Texas at $435 per head.

JB Cattle Co., Abilene, sold to Texas Panhandle feedyards one load of Okie and quarter cross steers and bulls weighing 565 pounds at $84.60 delivered, also a load of No. 1 Okie heifers weighing 686 at $72.35 f.o.b.

Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter July 1 in the seven leading feeding states totaled 7.68 million head, up 17 percent from the previous year but one percent below July 1, 1995.

Fat lambs in San Angelo brought $73-80, with a set up to $84. Midwest markets had fats $78-80. In Omaho 90-130 pound lambs brought $78.
