Plains Feedlots Give Up $1 To Move Cattle At Midweek
After weeks of late trade or none at all, Plains cattle feeders moved considerable numbers on Wednesday of this week. It cost them a dollar to do it, however.

Both Feeder, Killer Lamb Prices Uneven
All classes of sheep saw uneven price trends around the country this week. Feeder lambs were firm to $2 higher in San Angelo and as much as $3-5 higher at Fredericksburg but steady in the Midwest. The Midwest was also steady on slaughter lambs, as was San Angelo, but Goldthwaite termed them $5-10 lower. Slaughter ewes were steady to $2 lower in San Angelo and steady in the Midwest.

Texas Slaughter Goat Prices Range Steady To Much Lower
The volatile Texas slaughter goat market reversed course in some areas this week after posting big gains last week.

Beef Recall Encompasses 21 States And 19 Million Pounds
A recall of ground beef suspected of being contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 that caused illnesses in 18 people is being expanded to 19 million pounds and 21 states, says officials with the U.S. Agriculture Department. The beef recall involves product produced at the ConAgra Beef Co. plant here.

USDA Mid-Year Sheep Inventory Down 2% At 8.1 Million Head
The U.S. sheep and lamb inventory on July 1 was down two percent from a year ago at 8.1 million head. Breeding sheep numbers declined two percent to 4.78 million head. Market sheep and lambs, including newborn lambs, were down two percent at 3.32 million head.

Texas Agriculture Commissioner Susan Combs and Texas Animal Health Commission Executive Director Dr. Linda Logan headline the Texas A&M University Beef Cattle Short Course scheduled for Aug. 5-7 on the campus of Texas A&M University.

The U.S. cattle herd continues to shrink, as evidenced by USDA's mid-year cattle inventory report released late last week.

Nation’s Feeder Cattle Prices Steady To $1 Higher Last Week
Feeder cattle prices were mostly steady to $1 higher for the second week in a row. Once again, the bulk of the price advance was on yearlings.

Cattle On Feed Off Four Percent In Seven Main Feeding States
Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter July 1 in the seven leading feeding states totaled 9.06 million head, down four percent from the same date in 2001 but up one percent from July 1, 2000.

Slaughter Cattle Trade Slow Through Early Friday Morning
Slaughter cattle trade around the country continued slow through Friday morning, little movement reported.

Angelo Feeder Lambs Steady, Fats Lower
Slaughter lambs were weak, feeder lambs firm to $2 higher, slaughter ewes steady to $2 lower, the greatest decline on thin ewes; nannies and kids were weak. Trading and demand moderate. Quality average to plain. Two day receipts totaled an estimated 18,000 head, around 50 percent slaughter ewes, 15 percent feeder lambs, five percent slaughter lambs and the balance goats.

Superior Video Sale Steady To $4 Higher
Superior Livestock Auction sold more than 177,000 head of stocker, feeder and bred cattle in their annual "Video Royale" auction.

Lampasas Cattle Hold Steady, Some Higher
Feeder steers and heifers were $1-3 higher, slaughter cows and bulls $1-2 lower. Receipts totaled 482 head.

Fredericksburg Lambs Higher, Goats Lower
Stock, feeder and slaughter lambs were $3-5 higher, stock, feeder and slaughter goats $8-10 lower. Receipts totaled 4872 head, around 30 percent sheep including nearly 850 lambs.

Worldwide Wool Trade Remains At Standstill
Worldwide wool trading remained quiet again last week.

Feeders Steady To Up In San Saba And Mason
Steers were steady last week in Mason and San Saba, heifers $1-2 higher, packer cows and bulls steady to $2 higher, bred cows and pairs steady. Receipts at the two sales totaled 789 head.

Special Sales Higher In Mason And San Saba
Lightweight steers and heifers were $2-3 higher in special stocker and feeder sales at Mason and San Saba July 8 and 11, heavyweights $1-3 higher, packer cows and bulls steady, bred cows and young pairs strong in a special replacement sale at San Saba. Receipts for the two sales totaled 2772 head.

Llano Cattle Mixed, Most Killers Lower
Feeder steers and heifers sold mixed this week, most slaughter classes lower in light receipts of 320 head.

Most Abilene Cattle Sell Steady To Higher
Feeder steers and heifers under 500 pounds traded $2-3 higher, heavier weights steady, slaughter cows and bulls steady, replacement cows and pairs steady to firm. Receipts totaled 902 head.

Milano Prices Steady On All Cattle Sales
Feeder steers and heifers as well as slaughter cows all traded steady, bulls untested. Receipts totaled 702 head.

Most Decatur Feeder Cattle Steady To Up
Calves and yearlings sold steady to $2 higher on the lighter end, stockr cows and pairs steady and slaughter cows and bulls steady to $1 higher. Receipts totaled 1022 head, mostly calves and yearlings.

Most Hamilton Sheep, Goat Prices Steady
Sheep and goat prices were generally steady, some Barbados higher on receipts of 2770 head.

Kansas Direct Feeder Cattle Mostly Steady
Feeder steers sold mostly steady, heifers steady to firm.

Junction Lambs Off, Kid Goats Down $2-4
Lambs sold as much as $8 lower, other classes of sheep not far behind; Angora goats were $5 lower, Spanish kids, nannies and muttons steady to lower. Receipts totaled 5240 head.

Goldthwaite Off $5-10 On Lamb, Goat Classes
Slaughter lambs were off $5-10, stocker, feeder and slaughter goats off $8-10. Receipts totaled 2222 head, including about 555 head of sheep.

U.S. Meat Production 3.2% Above A Year Ago
Total red meat production under federal inspection for the week ending July 20 was estimated at 898.6 million pounds, 1.4 percent more than the previous week and 6.1 percent above the same period last year. Year-to-date red meat production was 3.2 percent above last year’s figure at 25.2 billion pounds.
