Cattle On Feed Off Four Percent
In Seven Main Feeding States
WASHINGTON —(USDA)— Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter
July 1 in the seven leading feeding states totaled 9.06 million head,
down four percent from the same date in 2001 but up one percent from
July 1, 2000.
Seven-state placements during June came to 1.42 million, 16 percent
below a year earlier but one percent above two years ago.
June marketings in the seven states amounted to 1.77 million head,
three percent below June 2001 and four percent below the same period
two years ago.
Other disappearance during June totaled 42,000 head, 30 percent
below the previous year but up 14 percent from June 2000.
USDA's broader tally of feedlots with a capacity of 1000 or more
head showed 10.49 million cattle and calves on feed July 1, five
percent below 2001 but one percent above two years ago.
June placements in the broader tally totaled 1.64 million, 16
percent below June 2001 and one percent below the same period in 2000;
net placements were 1.59 million. Placements of cattle and calves
weighing less than 600 pounds came to 341,000 head; 600-699 pounds
356,000; 700-799 pounds 513,000; and 800 pounds and heavier 434,000.
June marketings in the national inventory totaled 2.08 million, two
percent below last year and five percent below the year before.
Other disappearance came to 51,000 head during June, 34 percent
below 2001 and 11 percent below 2000.
Cattle on feed in all United States feedlots July 1 totaled 12.4
million down five percent from a year earlier but one percent above
July 1, 2000. Feedlots with 1000 or more head accounted for 85 percent
of the total.
Statistics from the seven leading states, compared to a year
earlier:
Cattle on feed: Arizona 291,000 head, unchanged; California
485,000, up three percent; Colorado 1,030,000, down seven percent;
Iowa 350,000, up one percent; Kansas 2,160,000, down eight percent;
Nebraska 1,890,000, down one percent; and Texas 2,850,000, down five
percent.
Placements: Arizona 24,000, down 25 percent; California 67,000,
down 13 percent; Colorado 155,000, down three percent; Iowa 36,000,
unchanged; Kansas 380,000, down 15 percent; Nebraska 295,000, down
eight percent; and Texas 465,000, down 25percent.
Marketings: Arizona 31,000, down six percent; California 62,000, up
22 percent; Colorado 210,000, up two three percent; Iowa 60,000, up
nine percent; Kansas 480,000, down one percent; Nebraska 460,000, down
eight percent; and Texas 470,000, down five percent.
