U.S. June Pig Crop
Two Percent Higher

WASHINGTON —(USDA)— The June 2002 U.S. pig crop report showed a two percent increase over the previous year at 8.66 million head. Sows farrowing in June were up one percent at 976,000 head. The average number of pigs per litter was 8.87 head compared with 8.85 last year.

The U.S. inventory of sows and gilts on July 1 was down slightly at 5.98 million head.

The pig crop during the last seven months was up two percent at 59.2 million head.
