50 YEARS AGO

In San Angelo a man said this week he wished it would rain 20 inches tomorrow, 10 inches the next day, five inches the next, and so on until it got to one inch, and then rain that much every day till it got dry enough to plow.

Mrs. Pete Thompson of Santa Rosa, New Mexico, last week sold 650 good aged Hereford cows with 300-pound calves on them to Iowa parties at a reported $225 a pair.

T.W. Davenport of Wellington, Texas, sold 250 mixed calves at 30 cents straight across to Anderson Cattle Company of Pampa for October 15 delivery.

Otho Drake of San Angelo this week bought six loads of mixed whiteface lambs from George Montgomery of Ozona at 19 cents a pound; these deliver next Monday and are expected to weigh around 70 pounds. Drake also bought one load of blackface mixed lambs from Marshall Montgomery of Ozona for immediate delivery at 20 cents a pound.

Roy Radcliff of Mt. Dora, New Mexico, last week sold and delivered two loads of steer yearlings, weighing 625 pounds, to C.E. Davis of Amarillo at 29 cents a pound.

45 YEARS AGO

Dick Deahl of Stratford, Texas, bought at McGehee, Ark., 211 Angus mixed calves and resold them at $22.50 straight across to Johnny Wilkins of Amarillo; the latter bought them at their loading weight in Arkansas and paid the freight to Amarillo.

Arch Benge and John Braun of San Angelo and Midland sold and delivered about 900 blackface mixed lambs weighing 75 pounds at $20.50 and two loads of whiteface mutton feeder lambs at $19.

Leonard Zeilke of Amarillo bought 70 heifer yearlings, Herefords and Angus, weighing 710 pounds at $18.50 and received them Aug. 26 from Ernest Barnett of Amarillo.

Townsend Bros., Sanderson, this week were delivering about 2100 blackface mixed lambs weighing around 75 pounds in Fort Stockton at $21 cwt.

Jay Taylor of Amarillo sold, off his Magdalena, N.M. ranch, about 170 mixed calves and delivered them Aug. 20 to an Amarillo buyer at $21 for heifers (457 pounds) and $24 for steers (492 pounds).

Jack Gabriel of Lockhart, Texas, sold three loads of medium quality Hereford steer calves weighing 415 pounds at $28.25 delivered to Bob Evans of Texhoma, Okla.

Gary Simms of Panhandle sold 400 steer yearlings described as "plain southern mixed breeds" expected to weigh about 650 at $22.10 for delivery this week to John Cargile, Canyon order buyer.

Pena & Sons and Moleree & Son of Grants, N.M., have sold a total of about 2500 feeder lambs at $17.50 for October delivery to Culp & Sons of Salt Lake City; these are expected to average near 78 pounds at delivery.

G.H. Brewster, Dalhart, sold 325 improved Mexico steers expected to weigh 675-700 pounds to J.B. Buske, Friona, at $23, no cut, for Oct. 1-15 delivery, seller’s option.

Louis R. Parish of Illinois and Iowa bought 120 heifer yearlings and 220 steer yearlings expected to weigh 650 and 700 pounds, respectively, at $24 and $25 for Oct. 17 delivery at the ranch from Frank and Eugene Sauble of Springer, N.M.; these are choice quality yearlings from the Saubles’ own herd and this is the ninth consecutive year Parish has bought them.

Jim Curtis of Springer, N.M., sold 400 Angus and 100 Hereford yearling steers weighing 725-750 pounds at $26 to Fermon Willis of Raton.

Bluford Thornton of Pyote, Texas, sold 250 Hereford mixed calves weighing about 400 pounds at $27 and $30 to a Pecos buyer.

Dick Ballew of House, N.M., bought 110 Okie steers weighing 375 pounds at $28.25 and George Vaughan of Ft. Sumner, N.M., bought 107 Okie steers weighing 386 at $28.15 in the Montgomery, Ala. area.

Easley Feed Yards, Hereford, sold 162 choice 1065 pound steers at $27 to a San Antonio packer.

Jewel Avent of Tulia bought 175 Hereford mixed calves weighing about 450 pounds at $28 and $31 from E.A. Birdwell of Silverton.

Total red meat production under federal inspection last week was estimated at 633 million pounds, one percent below the previous week and two percent below a year ago.

Buck Sumners, Dalhart, bought in northwestern New Mexico 185 Hereford and a few black baldface steer yearlings weighing about 650 pounds at $38.50.

Francis Allison, Dalhart, sold 115 black baldface heifers weighing 300-325 pounds at $157.50 per head to a Pritchett, Colo. buyer.

Spring Creek Ranch, Romero, Texas, sold and delivered to a New Mexico buyer 74 Charolais cross and black baldface steers weighing 589 pounds at $45.22.

Texas fed lamb trade is mostly $30.50-31, some $31.50 f.o.b. feedlots. Farther north, fed lambs are mostly $30-31, some $31.50 delivered to Denver and Scottsbluff, Neb.

Frederich Drummond, Pawhuska, Okla., sold to an out of state buyer 500 No. 1 mixed breed steers weighing about 800 pounds at $38.

John Cross, Dalhart, bought out of Clayton, N.M., one load of Hereford steers weighing 625 pounds at $41 and two loads of Hereford heifers weighing 560 at $36; bought out of the Dalhart area 240 No. 1 Okie steers weighing 625 at 439 and 350 No. 1 and better Okie heifers weighing 630 at $35.90.

Sonora Wool and Mohair Co. sold 33,000 pounds of top-line kid mohair at sealed bid Tuesday for $7.519 per pound. A 15,000 pound line of fall kid showing some defect sold for $6.661. Bids were rejected on 85,000 pounds of yearling hair offered.

Tim Baker, Springer, N.M., sold 600 native steers weighing 700 pounds at $91 and 1100 heifer yearlings weighing 650 pounds at $86, all for October delivery to a Kansas buyer; also 300 steer calves off first-calf heifers, weighing 340 pounds at $141 to wheat pasture in the northern Panhandle of Texas.

Si Watkins, Temple, sold out of Central Oklahoma to a Western Oklahoma buyer 90 good-mouthed fall calving cows with 10 calves now, weighing 1075 pounds at $745 per head; out of West Texas to a West Texas buyer 50 black 4-5 year-old pairs with big calves and bred back, weighing 1050 at $1050 per pair.

The USDA cold storage report last week showed lamb and mutton up 43 percent over the same period a year ago to 18.8 million pounds. That is up 13 percent from the previous month and the largest total amount of lamb and mutton in storage in several years.

In San Angelo feeder lambs were a little softer with 40-70 pounders $100-107, 70-90 pounds $92-102 and 90-100 pounds $94-99.50.

JB Cattle Co., Abilene, sold on a delivered basis to Kansas grass one load of No. 1 Okie steers weighing 550 pounds at $87.83 also one load of heifer mates weighing 510 at $79.36; to a West Texas feedyard f.o.b. two loads of No. 1 steers weighing 700 at $76.53 and a load of similar heifers weighing 697 at $73.13.
