Meat Imports Remain
At Liberal Rates
WASHINGTON —(USDA)— USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection
Service reports that 42,335 metric tons, or around 93.1 million pounds
of meat were passed for entry into the U.S. the week ending July 27.
It was the third largest weekly volume of the year.
The largest contributor was Canada with 23,575 metric tons,
followed by Australia with 8890 mt, New Zealand 6237 mt, Brazil 1121,
and Denmark 1023. Mexico sent 132 mt, mostly beef.
Total beef imports were 26,015 mt. Fresh beef imports were 23,586
mt, with 9388 from Canada, 8240 from Australia and 5736 from New
Zealand. Processed beef at 2429 mt came from Brazil 1121 and Canada
606.
Pork imports totaled 14,136 mt with 8291 fresh pork and 5845
processed. Most of the pork came from Canada, with their amount of
processed pork nearly double any weekly period from them this year.
Veal imports were 197 mt with 131 from Canada and 64 from
Australia.
Lamb and mutton imports were 957 mt, the smallest weekly volume of
the year except for the holiday-shortened first week of January.
Imports were 478 mt from Australia and 459 from New Zealand.
Goat meat imports were 102 mt, with 91 from Australia and 11 from
New Zealand.
An additional 641 mt of poultry products were imported, practically
all from Canada.
