Shawn Franklin Earns Win
At New Mexico State Fair

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Calf roper Shawn Franklin proved that hard work and determination really do pay off.

Franklin, of Wetumka, Okla., won the calf roping average title at the New Mexico State Fair Rodeo in Albuquerque last week with a time of 26.5 seconds on three head. This was his first win in the 12 years he has been coming to Albuquerque.

Franklin entered the final round in seventh place with 18.9 seconds on two head. He roped and tied his final calf in 7.6 seconds to capture the average title and $3617.

Steer wrestler Jason Lahr of Emporia, Kan., smoked the competition to win the average title with 13.6 seconds on three head. His closest competitor was Randy Suhn, who turned in a time of 15.9 seconds. Lahr was third in the first round with a 4.5-second run, first in the second round with a time of 4.7 and tied for the win in the final round with a 4.4.

The win was crucial for Lahr, who was ranked 17th in the Jack Daniel's World Standings prior to Albuquerque. He collected $6090 and moved to 13th in the world standings with $47,063 in season earnings to date.

In the saddle bronc riding, Ramos Benny collected 243 points on three head to win the average title. A former seventh grade reading teacher from Bellville, Texas, captured the barrel racing title in Albuquerque; Kelly Kaminski won the first round in 15.68 seconds, was seventh in the second round with a 15.74, and in the final round she turned in the fastest time of 15.72 to finish atop the leaderboard with a total time of 47.14 seconds on three runs. She quit teaching two years ago to pursue her dream of competing at the Wrangler NFR. She collected $4095 to move one step closer to realizing that dream.

Other average winners in Albuquerque include Cody DeMers, Boulder, Mont., bareback riding, 235 points on three head, $3422; Wade Wheatley, Hughson, Calif./Kyle Lockett Ivanhoe, Calif., team roping, 15.1 seconds on three head, $4624; and Jason McClain, Lewis, Colo., bull riding, 177 points on two, $5811.

In the all around competition, Jesse Bail, Camp Crook, S.D., leads with $186,741. He is followed by Cash Myers, Athens, Texas, with $160,768; Trevor Brazile, Anson, Texas, $146,945; Blair Burk, Durant, Okla., $138,366; and Rich Skelton, Llano, Texas, $138,366.
