Lambs, Lamb Meat Prices Move Higher
Feeder lambs were generally on the firm to higher side everywhere this week, Goldthwaite moving up $3-5. Slaughter lambs were also firm, with Midwest markets $3 higher. Fredericksburg was an exception at $3-5 lower, but no heavy lambs were on hand. Slaughter ewes were a little lower in Texas and steady to $3 higher on Midwest markets.

Plains Fed Cattle Trade Quiet As Market Sorts Off Mad Cow
That Canadian mad cow had short legs. 
Tuesday's announcement of a confirmed "mad cow" case in Canada knocked the props out from under the futures board, but evidently only for the day; both fat and feeder contracts were back up again Wednesday.

Texas Slaughter Goat Prices Suffer Severe Price Tumble
There was no up and down pattern this week on slaughter goat price trends; it was all down. Kid prices were $5-10 lower for the most part, some off much more.

On Tuesday the Canadian Minister of Agriculture told the world that one eight year-old beef cow from a ranch in Canada's Alberta province tested positive for bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or mad cow disease.

U.S. Trade Representative Robert B. Zoellick and Agriculture Secretary Ann M. Veneman said the United States, Argentina, Canada, and Egypt will file a World Trade Organization case against the European Union over its illegal five-year moratorium on approving agricultural biotech products. Other countries expressing support for this case by joining it as third parties include Australia, Chile, Colombia, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru and Uruguay.

Steer and heifer prices in the season's first special feeder calf sale at Producers Livestock Auction were steady with last week's regular sale.

Feeder Cattle Prices Higher Last Week, Optimism Pervasive
Feeder cattle prices were another $1-2 higher across the country last week. Optimism abounds in the livestock markets, especially the beef sector. Higher cash and futures prices were the primary factors.

Fed Cattle Prices Move Higher On Strength, Demand For Beef
Slaughter cattle made positive gains early last week as the bulk of cattle traded $1-2 higher on Tuesday. Packers worked diligently to keep up with the strong demand for beef and the week's kill again reached well into the 700,000-plus range.

Cattle On Feed Off 4 Percent Nationwide In 1000-Head Lots
Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter May 1 in feedlots with a capacity of 1000 or more head totaled 10.53 million head, four percent below last year and six percent below two years ago.

Angelo Feeder Lambs Firm, Cattle Higher
Feeder lambs sold firm this week, slaughter lambs and slaughter ewes weak; kid goats were weak to $5 lower and nannies weak. Two day receipts totaled 13,591 head, around 40 percent slaughter ewes, 15 percent feeder lambs, five percent slaughter lambs and 40 percent goats.

Boxed Beef Values To Four-Month High
The National comprehensive boxed beef cutout report on all fed steers and heifers sold last week showed an advance of $4.34 to reach $129.33, the highest value since late January.

Abilene Feeder Steer, Heifer Prices Lower
Feeder steers and heifers sold steady to $1 lower, slaughter cows and bulls steady to firm, stock cows and pairs steady. Receipts totaled 1239 head.

Weekly Meat Imports At 32,605 Metric Tons
Imported meat and poultry passed for entry into the United States the week ending April 5 amounted to 32,605 metric tons, or around 71.7 million pounds.

Decatur Feeder Steer, Heifer Prices Steady
Feeder steers and heifers sold generally steady with some strength on lightweights, fleshy slaughter cows and bulls strong, thin kinds $1-2 lower, stock cows and pairs steady to higher. Receipts totaled 1802 head.

Fredericksburg Lambs Steady, Goats Lower
Feeder lambs sold steady, slaughter lambs $3-5 lower, stock goats $4-5 lower, slaughter goats $8-10 lower. Receipts totaled 4241 head.

Hamilton Kids Lower, Sheep, Cattle Steady
Sheep classes sold steady Monday, kid goats lower, nannies steady. Receipts totaled 3001 head. All cattle classes sold steady Tuesday on receipts of 302 head.

Kansas Direct Feeder Steer Prices Higher
Feeder steers sold firm to $2 higher last week in Kansas direct trade; heifers were too few for an adequate test, but showed a firm undertone. Severe thunderstorms moved across the area with as much as 6-9 inches of rain in some local spots. Sales were confirmed on 18,659 head.

Milano Feeder Steer, Heifer Trade Lower
Feeder steers and heifers sold $1-3 lower, slaughter cows and bulls steady. Receipts totaled 1094 head.

Domestic Wool Slow, Aussie Wools Lower
Wool trading the past 10 days was virtually at a standstill in most areas across the U.S. Demand was light to very light.

U.S. Meat Production 1.4% Above A Year Ago
Total red meat production under federal inspection last week was estimated at 910.9 million pounds, .8 percent more than a week earlier and 1.4 percent more than a year ago. Cumulative meat production for the year to date was down .8 percent at 17.16 billion pounds.

Most Lampasas Cattle Prices Called Higher
Feeder steers and heifers sold $1-3 higher, slaughter cows $1-2 higher, bulls $2-4 higher. Receipts totaled 903 head.

Junction Feeder Lamb, Fat Kid Trends Lower
Lambs sold $1-3 lower, ewes $1-3 higher; Angoras steady; stock meat type nannies $2-6 higher, fat nannies and billies steady, muttons $2-5 higher, kids $2-4 lower. Receipts totaled 4563 head.

Colorado City Feeder Cattle Prices Steady
Feeder steers and heifers were fully steady, weights over 500 pounds $1-3 higher, slaughter cows and bulls $2-3 higher, pairs $10-50 higher. Receipts totaled 534 head.

Goldthwaite Lambs Higher, Goats Off
Feeder lambs sold $3-5 higher, slaughter lambs steady to firm, all classes of goats $5-10 lower. Receipts totaled 3948 head.

Cuero Feeder Steers, Heifer Prices Mixed
Lightweight feeder steers and heifers were higher, other weights a little lower, slaughter cows $1-1.50 higher, except fat cows $2-2.50 higher. Receipts totaled 1220 head.

Cold Storage Meats 7% Below A Year Earlier
Total red meat supplies in freezers on April 30 were seven percent below April 2002 at 959.1 million pounds.

Most Mason, San Saba Cattle Prices Higher
Feeder steers sold steady to $3 higher last week in Mason and San Saba, the advance on yearlings, heifers $1-2 higher, slaughter cows and bulls $1-3 higher, stock cows and pairs $10-20 higher. Receipts totaled 1643 head at the two sales.

Billings Feeder Lamb, Fat Ewe Trend Higher
Feeder lambs sold $1-2 higher, slaughter ewes steady to $1 higher with fat ewes $1-2 lower. Receipts totaled 921 head.
