Very little price fluctuation was noted this week on fat and feeder lambs around the country.

That applies to all branches of the military services with the exception of the Coast Guard, which is not part of the Department of Defense.

Dr. Richard Reading is stepping on some toes, maybe a lot of toes. The Yale-trained ecologist with the Denver Zoological Foundation is interested in prairie dogs. The burrowing beasts are misunderstood and need more protection than they’re getting, Reading contends. He also believes that most of what currently pass as prairie dog protection efforts are misdirected.

Economist Sees Sign Of Herd Rebuilding In Cattle Count
The cattle market has continued to show strength after its mid-June weakness. The recent weakness appeared related to uncertainty associated with reports of mad cow disease in Canada in May. Since then, the market has been showing improvement, apparently in anticipation of a lower mid-year inventory.

New Border Land Association Seeks Border Patrol Changes
The Border Land Association Inc., a new private property rights association, was created in March by ranchers and concerned citizens who live along the Texas border. Their goal is to improve the security of the nation’s international borders and homeland by increasing citizen involvement in border control issues through cooperative efforts that recognize and protect private property rights.

Angelo Feeder Lambs Steady, Cattle Higher
Feeder lambs sold steady this week, slaughter lambs weak and slaughter ewes steady; slaughter kids were steady and nannies firm. Receipts totaled 9170 head, around 30 percent slaughter ewes, 10 percent feeder lambs, five percent slaughter lambs and 55 percent goats.

U.S. Meat Production 1.8% Below A Year Ago
Total red meat production under federal inspection last week was estimated at 885 million pounds, 1.7 percent less than a week earlier and 1.8 percent less than a year ago. Cumulative meat production for the year to date was down .2 percent at 26.98 billion pounds.

Mason Female Cattle Sell On Strong Side
Most cow-calf pairs sold strong at the special replacement female cattle sale, choice long bred cows and heifers were strong, short and medium bred unevenly steady. Receipts totaled 2377 head.

Cuero Feeder Steers, Heifers Trend Higher
Feeder steers sold $1-5 higher, heifers $5-8 higher, slaughter cows lower, bulls $1 higher. Receipts totaled 1618 head.

Domestic Wool Slow, Mohair Trade Active
Wool trading was slow again last week, demand moderate and seller interest light to moderate. The limited domestic sales were about steady.

Fredericksburg Steers Higher, Heifers Steady
Feeder steers sold $1-3 higher, heifers steady, slaughter cows and bulls steady. Receipts totaled 1173 head.

Llano Feeder Steers, Heifers Trend Steady
Feeder steers sold steady to $3 higher, heifers $2-4 higher, slaughter cows and bulls steady. Receipts totaled 584 head.

Decatur Feeder Steer, Heifer Prices Higher
Feeder steers and heifers sold steady to $3 higher, slaughter cows and bulls steady to $1 higher, good young bred stock cows and pairs $50-75 higher. Receipts totaled 1750 head.

Goldthwaite Lambs Firm, Goats Lower
Slaughter lambs sold steady to firm, slaughter and stock goats $3-5 lower. Receipts totaled 2641 head.

Milano Feeder Steers, Heifers Found Steady
Feeder steers and heifers sold steady, slaughter cows steady, bulls $1-2 lower. Receipts totaled 1054 head.

Colorado City Feeder Cattle Prices Higher

Lampasas Feeder Steer, Heifer Prices Higher
Feeder steers and heifers sold $1-3 higher, slaughter cows $1-3 lower, bulls $1-2 lower. Receipts totaled 1319 head.

Hamilton Kids Lower, Feeder Cattle Steady
Sheep classes sold steady Monday, kid goats lower, nannies steady. Receipts totaled 1430 head. All classes of cattle sold steady Tuesday on receipts of 509 head.

Most Abilene Cattle Prices Called Higher
Feeder steers and heifers sold steady to $1 higher, slaughter cows and bulls $1-2 higher, stock cows and pairs $5-10 higher. Receipts totaled 1261 head.

Fredericksburg Lambs Steady, Fat Goats Off
Feeder lambs sold steady, slaughter lambs steady except lightweights $3-5 higher; slaughter goats were $3-5 lower, stock goats steady. Receipts totaled 3479 head.

Boxed Beef Values At Seven-Month High
Boxed beef values jumped $4.99 last week to $131.29, on the national comprehensive cutout report on all fed steers and heifers sold, reaching the highest level in seven weeks.

Most Mason, San Saba Yearlings Sell Higher
Feeder steer and heifer yearlings sold $1-3 higher last week in Mason and San Saba, calves steady, slaughter cows and bulls $1-2 lower, stock cows steady. Receipts totaled 1774 at the two sales.

Most Junction Sheep, Goat Prices Steady
Most sheep and goat classes sold steady. Receipts totaled 2791 head.
