To Revive Program Aimed At Military Use
The one true supporter of American wool is and always has
been the U.S. Armed Forces. Go back to the 1700s and you will find
wool in the military uniforms. Wool was the fiber of choice for all
dress uniforms then, and it’s still the fiber of choice today. No
matter if a soldier puts on a Marine Corps uniform or a Navy uniform,
that uniform is made of wool. That applies to all branches of the
military services with the exception of the Coast Guard, which is not
part of the Department of Defense.

Dog, Pans Current Protection Plans
Dr. Richard Reading is stepping on some toes, maybe a lot of
toes. The Yale-trained ecologist with the Denver Zoological Foundation
is interested in prairie dogs. The burrowing beasts are misunderstood
and need more protection than they’re getting, Reading contends. He
also believes that most of what currently pass as prairie dog
protection efforts are misdirected.

Rebuilding In Cattle Count
The cattle market has continued to show strength after its
mid-June weakness. The recent weakness appeared related to uncertainty
associated with reports of mad cow disease in Canada in May. Since
then, the market has been showing improvement, apparently in
anticipation of a lower mid-year inventory.

The Border Land Association Inc., a new private property
rights association, was created in March by ranchers and concerned
citizens who live along the Texas border. Their goal is to improve the
security of the nation’s international borders and homeland by
increasing citizen involvement in border control issues through
cooperative efforts that recognize and protect private property

Feeder lambs sold steady this week, slaughter lambs weak and
slaughter ewes steady; slaughter kids were steady and nannies firm.
Receipts totaled 9170 head, around 30 percent slaughter ewes, 10
percent feeder lambs, five percent slaughter lambs and 55 percent
goats.
U.S. Meat Production 1.8%
Below A Year Ago
Total red meat production under federal inspection last week
was estimated at 885 million pounds, 1.7 percent less than a week
earlier and 1.8 percent less than a year ago. Cumulative meat
production for the year to date was down .2 percent at 26.98 billion
pounds.

female cattle sale, choice long bred cows and heifers were strong,
short and medium bred unevenly steady. Receipts totaled 2377 head.

slaughter cows lower, bulls $1 higher. Receipts totaled 1618 head.

seller interest light to moderate. The limited domestic sales were
about steady.

cows and bulls steady. Receipts totaled 1173 head.

Seven-Month High
Boxed beef values jumped $4.99 last week to $131.29, on the
national comprehensive cutout report on all fed steers and heifers
sold, reaching the highest level in seven weeks.

Yearlings Sell Higher
Feeder steer and heifer yearlings sold $1-3 higher last week
in Mason and San Saba, calves steady, slaughter cows and bulls $1-2
lower, stock cows steady. Receipts totaled 1774 at the two sales.
