50 YEARS AGO
D.M. Martinez of Roy, New Mexico, is reported to have sold 150
steer calves for October delivery to Bill Croft of Lewis, Kansas, at
20 cents a pound. The calves are expected to weigh 375 to 400 pounds
on delivery.

Cotton McDade of Clayton, New Mexico, this week bought one load of
mixed Angus calves from Helen Swagerty of Clayton for October delivery
at 18 and 20 cents on the heifers and steers, respectively. These
calves are expected to weigh over 400 pounds on delivery.

Approximately 500,000 pounds of Texas 12-months wool sold at
various West Texas warehouses last week and buyers were dickering on
several clips early this week, but few additional trades were reported
closed up to Wednesday. Prices were firm, possibly slightly higher, on
purchases last week. Several cars sold in the San Angelo area at 65 to
76½ cents per pound, grease basis.
Mohair shearing is in swing throughout the goat country and the
fibre is accumulating in warehouses. Offers of 76½ cents for adult
and $1.01½ for kid hair are being refused by most growers.

Dick DeLong of San Angelo has sold 600 whiteface yearling ewes at
$13.50 per head.

In West Texas, several strings of choice stocker steer calves sold
at $20 to $21. The latter price was bid and refused on 500 head this
week on the Panhandle. At the same time, other good and choice steer
calves were sold at $17 to $19.

Homer Bennett, Clovis, sold 212 Angus steer yearlings expected to
weigh near 600 pounds at $25 to Hez Abernathy, Clovis, for Oct. 8
delivery.

Tye C. Terrell of Santa Fe has bought the Lovelace Livestock Co.
lambs at Corona, N.M., for October delivery at $21.60 and $22.60.

Jack Bradley of Hereford sold 200 heifer yearlings expected to
weigh around 800 pounds at $24 to Sam Ketch of Rocky Ford, Colo. The
heavier heifers will be delivered Sept. 1 and the lighter end in late
December.

Fred Ball of San Angelo received 650 blackface lambs in the Alpine
area that averaged 104 pounds. These were bought several weeks ago
from Gay Merriwether. The lambs all went to packers at $22.50 cwt.

Haney Tate of Clovis, N.M., bought 100 mixed calves weighing around
425 pounds at $31 straight for delivery this week from J.V. McAdoo,
Van Horn, Texas.

John Frantz of Hartley, Texas, is reported to have sold 286 heifers
weighing 608 pounds at $18.50, delivered late last week to M.J.
Hankins of Stanton, Neb.

Wayne Cleveland of Canadian, Texas, sold 900 steer yearlings
expected to weigh 675 pounds at $20 for Sept. 1 delivery to Colorado
feeders.

Charlie Schwartz, Junction, reports contracting approximately
15,000 lambs in the wool for Oct. 1 delivery in the Edwards Plateau
area south and west of Junction at $18. Much of this area has had from
one to five inches of rain in the last two weeks.

Kain Cattle Co., Lubbock, last week bought 237 Holstein steers
averaging 716 pounds off of grass in the Sherman, Texas area at
$14.50; the steers were put on feed at Caprock Cattle Co.’s
feedyards in Lubbock.

Bud Linsom, Las Vegas, N.M., sold 115 heifer yearlings at $17 and
185 steers at $19, described as just good cattle expected to weigh
around 600, for Oct. 15 delivery to an Oklahoma buyer.

Mr. and Mrs. Will H. Bell of Laredo have recently sold their ranch
west of Roundup, Mont., to Ralph and Hildegarde Ebeling of Round
Mountain, Texas. The Ebelings took possession of the ranch June 1. The
Bells recently purchased the Art Rustuen ranch northwest of Grassrange,
Mont., and have assumed possession.

Producers Video Auction offered 17,000 feeder cattle in trade and
demand that were both termed moderate. Receipts were mostly from the
southeastern and south central states, several from north central
states. Delivery is mostly current through November.

Total red meat supplies in freezers July 31 decreased three percent
from June, but were up three percent from July 1997. Frozen beef
supplies were unchanged from last year at 302,447,000 pounds, four
percent less than the previous month.

Total red meat production under federal inspection last week was
estimated at 867.8 million pounds, 1.9 percent below a week earlier
and 2.2 percent above a year ago.

Heavy rain over a large portion of the hill country and West Texas
accumulated three-day totals from Sonora to Del Rio ranging from 10 to
20 inches and caused severe flooding and possible livestock losses.
