July Meat Production
Sets Record High Rate
WASHINGTON —(USDA)— July commercial red meat production for the
United States set a monthly record high at 4.05 billion pounds, one
percent more than a year ago. Both months contained 23 weekdays and
four Saturdays.
Beef production was up slightly at 2.44 billion pounds, cattle
slaughter was up three percent at 3.29 million head, and the average
liveweight was down 23 pounds at 1225 pounds.
Veal production was down 12 percent at 14.8 million pounds, calf
slaughter was down 11 percent at 84,900 head, the average liveweight
down three pounds at 288 pounds.
Pork production was up one percent at 1.58 billion pounds, hog kill
was up slightly at 8.1 million head, the average liveweight up two
pounds at 262 pounds.
Lamb and mutton production was down four percent at 15.7 million
pounds, sheep slaughter was down eight percent at 239,200 head, the
average liveweight up five pounds at 131 pounds.
January to July commercial red meat production was up slightly at
27.1 billion. Accumulated beef production was down slightly at 15.6
billion pounds, cattle slaughter was up two percent at 20,757,700
head, liveweights down 10 pounds at 1231 pounds. Veal production was
up two percent at 111.8 million pounds, slaughter was up one percent
at 576,400 head, liveweights up three pounds at 322 pounds. Pork
production was up one percent at 11.2 billion pounds, hog slaughter
was up slightly at 56,612,100 head, liveweights unchanged at 266
pounds. Lamb and mutton production was down 10 percent at 114.5
million pounds, slaughter was down 10 percent at 1,713,000 head,
liveweights down one pound at 134 pounds.
