U.S. Meat Production
3.1% Below A Year Ago

WASHINGTON —(USDA)— Total red meat production under federal inspection last week was estimated at 913.6 million pounds, 1.5 percent less than a week earlier and 3.1 percent less than a year ago. Cumulative meat production for the year to date was down .3 percent at 29.72 billion pounds.

Cattle slaughter was estimated at 725,000 head, compared to 723,000 a week earlier and 723,000 a year ago, liveweights 1227 pounds, 1228 and 1261, respectively; beef production was 540.3 million pounds. Cumulative cattle slaughter was up .9 percent at 23,068,000 head, beef production down .6 percent at 17.21 billion pounds.

Calf and veal slaughter was estimated at 20,000 head, 20,000 and 22,000, liveweights 288 pounds, 285 and 292; veal production was 3.5 million pounds. Cumulative slaughter was up 1.5 percent at 639,000 head, veal production up 1.1 percent at 119.6 million pounds.

Hog slaughter was estimated at 1,887,000 head, 1,968,000 and 1,967,000, liveweights 262 pounds, 262 and 260; pork production was 366.3 million pounds. Cumulative slaughter was down .3 percent at 61,953,000 head, pork production up .4 percent at 12.27 billion pounds.

Sheep and lamb slaughter was estimated at 54,000 head, 55,000 and 54,000, liveweights 131 pounds, 131 and 129; lamb and mutton production was 3.5 million pounds. Cumulative slaughter was down 8.4 percent at 1,803,000 head, lamb and mutton production down 9.3 percent at 121.3 million pounds.
