U.S.-Canada Cattle
Numbers Decline 1%

WASHINGTON —(USDA)— All cattle and calves in the United States and Canada combined on July 1 were down one percent from a year ago at 119.6 million head. All cows and heifers that have calved were down slightly at 48.7 million head.

This information is a result of a joint effort by Statistics Canada and USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service to release the number of cattle and calves by class and calf crop for both countries within one publication. The information was requested by the U.S. cattle industry to provide producers additional information about potential beef supplies. U.S. inventory numbers were previously released on July 18.

All cattle and calves in the United States were down one percent at 103.9 million head, two percent below the 105.8 million two years ago.

All cattle and calves in Canada totaled 15.7 million head, up two percent from both last year and two years ago. All cows and heifers that have calved were up one percent from both last year and two years ago at six million head.
