U.S. Meat Production
6.4% Below A Year Ago

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. —(USDA)— Total red meat production under federal inspection last week was estimated at 898.6 million pounds, .3 percent less than a week earlier and 6.4 percent less than a year ago. Cumulative meat production for the year to date was down one percent at 38.75 billion pounds.

Cattle slaughter was estimated at 631,000 head, compared with 648,000 a week earlier and 694,000 a year ago, liveweights 1234 pounds, 1233 and 1267, respectively; beef production was 467.2 million pounds. Cumulative cattle slaughter was up .1 percent at 29,789,000 head, beef production down 1.8 percent at 22.23 billion pounds.

Calf and veal slaughter was estimated at 18,000 head, 19,000 and 23,000, liveweights 303 pounds, 300 and 307; veal production was 3.3 million pounds. Cumulative slaughter was down 2.1 percent at 822,000 head, veal production down 2.7 percent at 152.5 million pounds.

Hog slaughter was estimated at 2,141,000 head, 2,101,000 and 2,149,000, liveweights 267 pounds, 266 and 267; pork production was 424.2 million pounds. Cumulative slaughter was down .4 percent at 82,033,000 head, pork production up .3 percent at $16.21 billion pounds.

Sheep and lamb slaughter was estimated at 56,000 head, 55,000 and 61,000, liveweights 135 pounds, 134 and 135; lamb and mutton production was 3.9 million pounds. Cumulative slaughter was down 8.7 percent at 2,360,000 head, lamb and mutton production down 9.2 percent at 158.2 million pounds.
