Ohl Bests Brazile In Match
At San Angelo Roping Fiesta

SAN ANGELO — Stephenville cowboy Cody Ohl collected the winner-take-all pot Saturday in the matched calf roping portion of San Angelo’s annual Roping Fiesta. After overcoming an early 10-second penalty, Ohl led Trevor Brazile, Decatur, by 33.74 seconds at the end of the 12-head match.

Brazile didn’t go home empty-handed, however, winning Sunday’s steer roping with a total of 59.5 seconds on four head.

Justin Maass, Giddings, won the jackpot portion of Saturday’s calf roping, edging out Fred Whitfield, Hockley, by 15 one-hundredths of a second with a total time of 29.97 seconds on three head. Brazile was close behind Whitfield at 30.29 to 30.12 seconds.

Sunday’s junior matched calf roping win went to Sterling Smith, Stephenville, who bested Joseph Parsons, Marana, Ariz., by 4.21 seconds on eight calves. They were just a little more than a half-second apart in overall average times, Smith at 14.43 and Parsons 14.96.

In Saturday’s match, Ohl built a lead of 1.49 seconds on the first two calves, but a 10-second penalty when his third calf kicked loose put him behind by 6.33 seconds on three, and Brazile’s 10.53-second run on calf number four against 11.04 for Ohl lengthened the deficit to 6.84 seconds. Brazile tied numbers five and six in 10.9 and 10.91 seconds, respectively, and Ohl’s 9.79 and 9.27-second runs on those trimmed the difference to 4.09 seconds at the halfway point.

A 14.07-second time on number seven against 9.99 for Brazile left Ohl trailing by 8.17 seconds when the match resumed, but a 10-second penalty on the next calf wiped out Brazile’s lead and reversed the standings. Brazile then required 34.12 seconds on calf number nine, and Ohl went ahead by 29.04 seconds with a nine-flat run. Brazile trimmed his lead slightly on the next two calves, but Ohl was 9.36 on the final calf against 16.89 for Brazile. Average time on 12 calves was 11.54 for Ohl and 14.35 for Brazile.
