Lambs Move
To Slaughter
Feeder lambs remain in short supply throughout the country, and
that shortage was enhanced the last couple of weeks by a considerable
number of feeder weight lambs moving direct to slaughter channels.
Price trends on both fats and feeders were mostly steady at Texas
markets, but around $3 higher in the Midwest.
Slaughter ewe prices turned much higher this week. San Angelo was
as much as $10 higher and Midwest markets around $4 higher. Exports to
Mexico last week came to 1645 head and 250 crossed the Rio Grande
through Tuesday of this week.
Carcass cutout values on Monday were up $2.79 for the week at
$209.93.
Carcass prices were mostly steady with the top end off about $5 and
over 85 pound kinds, which made up 10 percent of the supply, around
$1.50 lower. Prices on middleweights ranged from $178 to $186 with
averages $180.05-181.68; 40-45 pounds were $179-182 and averaged
$179.68, and weights over 85 pounds made $173.
Lamb and mutton imports the week ending September 27 totaled 1127
metric tons, or around 2.5 million pounds, which was the equivalent of
66 percent of domestic production that week. Lamb imports were 969
metric tons and mutton 158.
In San Angelo 62 pound feeder lambs brought $124 and 70-90 pounds
$107.50-111. Fredericksburg had 50-70 pound lambs at $120-132 and
70-90 pounds $108-123. Midwest markets quoted 40-60 pound feeders
$109-127, 60-80 pounds $95-119 and 80-105 pounds $85-110. The Billings
market was called $7-23 higher than two weeks earlier. Weights 40-50
pounds made $125-130, 50-80 pounds $115-139, 80-90 pounds $115-126,
90-100 pounds $109-115, 100-110 pounds $105-117, 110-120 pounds
$97-98.50, and 130-135 pounds $88.50-91. Newell, S.D. feeders of 50-60
pounds made $140-146, 60-70 pounds $134-137, 70-80 pounds $123.50-131,
and 80-100 pounds $118-122.50.
Feeder lambs weighing 95-98 pounds moved direct in West Texas at
$100-102. A few 90-pound lambs in Washington made $100.
Slaughter lambs in San Angelo brought $85-99 on 90-130 pounds,
mostly $88-95, 40-60 pounds $126-136, a few $139-140, 50-70 pounds
$118-125, a few to $132.50, 70-80 pounds $114-123.50, 80-90 pounds
$110-119, and 90-105 pounds $105-106. Fredericksburg called 90-130
pound fats $94-106 and 45-85 pounds $117-13.50. Goldthwaite fats
scaling 90-120 pounds were $90-103 and 50-85 pounds $104-121. Midwest
markets moved shorn lambs for $89.50-90.57, wooled 100-120 pounds
$83-86, and 120-150 pounds $85-91.
Fat slaughter ewes in San Angelo brought $38-45, lean kinds
$54-61.50. Midwest markets quoted ewes $30-42. Billings fat ewes were
$38-40.50.
San Angelo had mixed age stock ewes weighing 110-140 pounds at
$61-66, Idaho moved yearlings at $145 per head, and bred whiteface
ewes were $135 in California.
