U.S. Meat Production
6.4% Below A Year Ago

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. —(USDA)— Total red meat production under federal inspection last week was estimated at 875.3 million pounds, 2.6 percent less than a week earlier and 6.4 percent less than a year ago. Cumulative meat production for the year to date was down 1.1 percent at 39.6 billion pounds.

Cattle slaughter was estimated at 597,000 head, compared to 631,000 a week earlier and 679,000 a year ago, liveweights 1233 pounds, 1234, and 1263, respectively; beef production was 440.8 million pounds. Cumulative cattle slaughter was down .2 percent at 30,386,000 head, beef production down 2.1 percent at 22.68 billion pounds.

Calf and veal slaughter was estimated at 18,000 head, 18,000 and 21,000, liveweights 306 pounds, 303 and 302; veal production was 3.4 million pounds. Cumulative slaughter was down 2.5 percent at 840,000 head, veal production down 2.9 percent at 156 million pounds.

Hog slaughter was estimated at 2,146,000 head, 2,141,000 and 2,089,000, liveweights 268 pounds, 267 and 268; pork production was 427.1 million pounds. Cumulative slaughter was down .4 percent at 84,179,000 head, pork production up .4 percent at 16.6 billion pounds.

Sheep and lamb slaughter was estimated at 58,000 head, 56,000 and 62,000, liveweights 137 pounds, 135 and 132; lamb and mutton production was 4 million pounds. Cumulative slaughter was down 8.6 percent at 2,418,000 head, lamb and mutton production down 8.9 percent at 162.3 million pounds.
