Domestic Wool Slow, Aussies
Lower, Mohair Prices Improve

GREELEY, Colo. —(USDA)— Wool trading remained slow again last week across most of the U.S. Demand was moderate for light supplies, which were held in strong hands. Demand for wool top in the world market was narrow and little interest is shown in forward sales.

In Territory trading, Idaho reported 140,000 pounds of original bag, bellies out and untied, fall shorn 2.6-2.8 inch, low to very low yielding, including tender wool, 23-25.5 micron at $1.70-1.75 net clean; Colorado, 35,000 pounds of feedlot lamb wool, average yield, .75-1.5 inch, 18-20 micron $.40 and crossbred 23-26 micron .28 f.o.b. net; Montana, 18,000 pounds OB, BOU, three inch plus 21-21.5 micron $2.10 f.o.b. net.

Warehouse trading was slow, the undertone lower on 40,000 pounds reported. Graded, staple length 22-23 micron was $2 and 25.5 micron $1.70, both clean delivered.

Australia’s eastern market indicator was down eight to close at 799A cents per kilo clean, last year 1135. A total of 51,661 bales were offered with clearance at 84 percent. In futures trading at Sydney the 21 micron grease contracts for December were up one at $2.80 U.S. f.o.b. Sydney, February up three at $2.84, April up two at $2.82, June up two at $2.82, August the same $2.78, and October up two at $2.80. The 19 micron clean wool contracts for December were down one at $3.01, February up three at $3.10, April unchanged at $3.12, and June up one at $3.18. The 23 micron clean wool contracts for December were down three at $2.69, February up two at $2.72, April unchanged at $2.70, and June down one at $2.68. The Australian dollar is .7111 of the U.S. dollar, compared to .55 last year, an increase of 29 percent.

New Zealand wool prices were mixed, the fine indicator down 14 at 1067 New Zealand cents per kilo clean, medium up 11 at 595, and strong wool unchanged at 407. A total of 13,311 bales were offered. The New Zealand dollar is .6167 of the U.S. dollar, compared to .4977 last year, an increase of 24 percent.

Mohair trading in Texas was slow to moderate. Demand was good, but most supplies are in strong hands. Adult hair sold $.10-.15 higher with 395,000 pounds reported. Original bag adult 34-38 micron ranged $1-1.15, late $1.10-1.15, 12-month adult $1.05. All are f.o.b. the warehouse.

South Africa’s 16th Cape mohair sale of the season saw price advances on most types. Adult ranged 12-14 percent higher, kid hair up seven percent and young goat up 22 percent. This increase was despite a strengthening of the South African rand, now at 6.95 to the U.S. dollar. A total of 1,879,000 pounds was offered and 95 percent sold. In U.S. dollars, kid hair averaged $5.13, young goat $2.77, fine adult $2.02, and strong adult $2. Detailed prices show long kid hair, less than 26 micron, at $8.16-10.87, average $9.47, 26-28 micron $5.22-8.42, average $6.43, and over 28 micron $3.65-5.61, average $4.39; young goat less than 30 micron $4.21-5.06, average $4.50, 30-32 micron $2.48-3.20, average $2.92, and over 32 micron $2.22-2.41 average $2.27; adult less than 34 micron $2.22-2.41, average $2.30, 34-36 micron $1.93-2.10, average $2.02, 36-38 micron $1.86-2.10, average $2, and over 38 micron $1.94-2.02, average $2.05.
