50 YEARS AGO

Otho Drake of San Angelo this week bought 1000 mutton lambs on northern order at 17 cents a pound. Purchases included one load from Hillery Phillips of Ozona, 100 from Gerald Hartgraves of Eldorado, and about two loads from Sam Carnes of Sterling City. The lambs weighed from 68 to 84 pounds.

Cotton McDade of Clayton, New Mexico, this week bought 60 steer calves weighing 308 pounds at $20.75 cwt. and 20 steer yearlings weighing 550 pounds at $18 from Largent and Sadler of Grenville, New Mexico.

R.C. Johnson and Son of Dalhart bought 809 steer calves weighing 440 pounds at $18.50 cwt. from U Bar ranch of Muleshoe, November 19 delivery.

Carroll Lewis of Clarendon sold 48 mixed calves averaging 300 pounds at 17 and 19 cents to Buck Cone of Amarillo, November 23 delivery.

The Hoover Ranch of Tucumcari, New Mexico, has sold 500 cut-back cows to Pete Caviness of Clovis at six, eight and nine cents a pound, price depending on condition of the cows.

Charlie Silvers of Morton, Texas, last week sold and delivered 302 mixed calves averaging 398 pounds at $16.50 and $18.50 cwt. to L.C. Hill of Wellington.

Fifty-six bulls and six females averaged $260 each at the annual One-Stop Hereford Sale last week at Lovington, New Mexico.

Jack Canning of Eden has contracted around 2000 heavy wooled lambs for delivery off grain fields in the Eden area December 15 to January 15 at 18 cents a pound.

45 YEARS AGO

Rex Sanders of Spearman, Texas, bought 750 choice steer calves averaging 408 pounds at $35 and received them last week from Cotton McDade of Clayton, N.M. These were Diamond A calves off the old 3-V Ranch at Seligman, Ariz. J.A. Pitman of Hereford bought 670 steers of the same brand weighing 396 at $36 cwt., delivered to Hereford.

Bob Lantis of Dodge City, Kan., bought 280 heifer yearlings weighing 660 pounds at $25 from Winfield and received them recently on order for a Nebraska feeder.

Les Parker of Stratford has sold 1300 steer yearlings for future delivery to Gilbert Childers of Dalhart at $25 cwt.

Delivery is at seller’s option. Parker plans to deliver 300-350 heavier steers, weighing near 850 pounds, sometime in December; the remaining 950-1000 head, expected to weigh near 800 pounds, will be delivered about April 1.

Ben Sheppard, order buyer of Springfield, Mo., this week bought in the Flint Hills of Kansas, 100 choice Angus cows, three to six years old, and three Angus bulls at $300 each for the 103 head; they were bought for a western Oklahoma rancher.

Gary Simms of Panhandle, Texas, bought 131 heifer calves weighing about 300 pounds at $95 per head and received them this week from Charlie Ford of Amarillo.

Lewis Kinkead of Tucumcari sold 170 steer calves weighing 497 pounds at $22.50 and delivered them recently to Jim McConnell of St. Joseph, Mo.

Joe Berg of St. Francis, Texas, sold 137 heifer yearlings weighing 725 at $18 for shipment this week to Illinois feeders.

Buel Gray of Skellytown, Texas, bought one load of good age cows weighing about 1000 pounds and calves weighing near 400 at $235 per pair, delivered last week, from Ernie Bill Terry of White Deer.

The T-4 Cattle Co., Tucumcari, N.M., sold 500 cut cows averaging 950 pounds at $12, delivered last week to F.G. Collard of Amarillo.

Alton Ainsworth of Bledsoe, Texas, bought 68 mixed calves weighing 373 at $20 and $22, delivered last weekend, from Dutch Hinds of Crosbyton; also 66 calves weighing 380 at $21 and $23 from Luther Jones of Spur, delivered recently.

Widespread Texas rains this week curtailed auction runs and improved both the pasture and field grazing outlook. This further tightens supplies of feeder lambs. In direct trade, San Angelo dealers quoted feeders at $25-25.50.

Nortex Feedlot Co., Dalhart, sold 94 heifers weighing 870, grading 65 percent choice, at $25.50 to a New Mexico packer.

Cotton McDade of El Paso sold and delivered off the Garrett Ranch at Santa Fe, N.M., 650 Angus two to six year-old cows at $170 per head, 91 cows at $15 cwt., and 36 Hereford and four Angus bulls at $250 each to Lewis Cooper, Kenna, N.M.

Roy Wood, Farley, N.M., sold 193 No. 1 Okie steers weighing 575 at $26.25 to a Texas buyer.

Bogle & Bogle, Clovis, N.M., sold 180 mostly choice 985 pound steers at $27.25 to a Texas packer.

Ranchers who set out to buy cottonseed feed this week found that the price jumped $20 a ton in a single day. Quotations on 41 percent protein cake this week were about $200 a ton f.o.b. the mills, meal about $197.

Gene McGlaun, representing Doubledeck Cattle Co., Clovis, bought and received in the Capitan, N.M., area 500 choice Hereford steer calves weighing about 400 pounds at $62 and in the Athens, Texas area 114 No. 2 Okie steers weighing about 600 at $50.

Eldorado Wool & Mohair Co. set records on the sale of a single fall clip totaling about 31,500 pounds. It included about 20,000 pounds of adult at $5.677, about 9000 pounds of yearling at $6.719 and 2500 pounds of kid at $8.059.

Dick Russell, Bueyeros, N.M.,  sold off a Riverton, Wyo. ranch to an Idaho buyer 200 black baldface heifer and steer calves weighing 470 and 490 pounds at $65 and $70.

Doc Hagan, Yoakum, sold to a South Texas buyer 150 crossbred cows with 31 calves on them at $550 per cow.

The famed Cananea steer calves from Sonora, Mexico, 1750 head weighing 360-370 pounds, reportedly have sold to an American buyer at $75.50 cwt. on the Mexican side of the border across from Douglas, Ariz. These are described as high quality Herefords with a sprinkling of Charolais cross.

Buddy Major Cattle Co., Los Lunas, N.M., sold to a Texas buyer 3000 good native yearling heifers weighing about 580-600 pounds at $54.

Caprock Industries, Gruver, sold out of their Leoti, Kan. feedyard 1100 steers, 1075 lbs., 65% choice, $62.

Three loads of lambs were at Iowa points on the National Lamb Electronic Auction in a $58.25-60 range for shorn lambs.

Ty Jones Cattle Co., Canyon, bought in Southern New Mexico 200 Angus and black baldface steer calves weighing 500 pounds at $66, also 850 No. 1 Okie steers weighing 700 at $57.75.

Cedar Springs Ranch, Harper, sold through Mason Livestock Exchange 60 extra choice Angus heifer calves caked on grass and saved for replacements, weight 548 pounds at $99. Eighty-nine steer mates, not caked, weighed 544 at $94.25.

Sheep and lambs on feed for slaughter in the 16 major feeding states totaled 1.55 million head on Nov. 1. Lambs accounted for 1,458,000 head, mature sheep 80,000 head. The Jan. 1 figures had 1.66 million on feed, including 1.58 million lambs and 81,000 sheep.

Vann-Roach Cattle Co., Fort Worth, bought in Central Texas one load of choice preconditioned exotic steer and heifer calves weighing 525 pounds straight across at $89 and $84.

In Goldthwaite slaughter lambs weighing 90-130 pounds brought $63.50-69.50. Midwest fat lambs brought $70-76 and Virginia had fats at $66.75-68.

California sold 210,000 pounds of lamb wool with whiteface 20.6-23.5 micron bringing 37 cents grease, crossbred 23.5-26 micron 30 cents. Nearly 530,000 pounds has sold in warehouse trading the past two weeks. Mohair trading was slow. In Texas 15,000 pounds of yearling kid went at $2.50, No. 2 at $2.25.

A total of 64 bulls averaged $2076 per head in the West Central Texas Angus Association sale at Producers Livestock Auction in San Angelo. The high selling bull was consigned by Hales Cattle Co., Canyon, and sold to Walter C. Pope, Eldorado, for $4300.

Total red meat production under federal inspection last week was estimated at 914.7 million pounds, four percent more than a week ago and 5.1 percent above a year ago.

Texas Panhandle movement showed 27,800 head of cattle, but almost 25,000 of those were formulas and the bulk of the others sold Friday. Packers by late Tuesday were bidding $60 after earlier bids reported as low as $59.

Brown Cattle Co., Clyde, sold on a delivered basis to Texas Panhandle buyers one load of fancy No.1 English and English-exotic cross steers and bulls weighing 477 pounds at $81.30, also a short load of No. 1 English and one-eighth Brahman cross steers and bulls weighing 477 at $78.90.

Fat lambs moving direct in West Texas included 120-135 pounders at $60-63.
