Fed Cattle Prices Jump
As Much As $6 From Last Week
Mad what?
Plains fed cattle prices are still a far cry from their heady
highs of late last year, but they came roaring back that direction
this week, gaining as much as $6 over the bulk of last week’s trade.
The Texas Cattle Feeders Association counted 53,550 head
selling in their area through midweek, almost 3000 more than their
initial showlist, which itself was up about 7000 head. Trade opened at
$78 Tuesday but quickly jumped to $80 by Wednesday morning. Captives
added another 31,337 head, down 5067.
Live prices in
Kansas
and
Nebraska
followed suit,
and dressed trade rose to $130 after opening at $126.
Midwest
terminals sold
the bulk of offerings in a range from $75 to $79.25.
Stocker and feeder cattle rebounded across the country as well
this week, both in price and number.
Joplin
,
Mo.
sold 7750 head
and termed prices $4-6 higher, as much as $8 higher on thin or fancy
kinds. A roundup of four Florida auctions was $1-3 higher on 4838 head
between them, and La Junta, Colo. termed receipts of 1351 head too few
to test the market but noted a lower undertone.

head $1-2 higher and Crockett, with 1056 head on hand, was $4-5 higher
on weights over 500 pounds, lighter kinds $5-6 higher. Hallettsville
was $7-10 higher on 2039 head. Three Rivers declined to call a trend
on 1015 head.
Oklahoma City
sold 9350 head
at rates $2-3 higher on feeder weights and $2-7 higher on calves. Best
350-400 pound steer calves brought $118.50-131; 450-500 pounds
$110-117; 500-550 pounds $99-114; 550-600 pounds $99-107.25; 600-650
pounds $91-100; 650-700 pounds $89-95.25, fleshy $85-89.50; 700-750
pounds $85.75-91; 750-800 pounds $84-87; 800-850 pounds $84-87.75;
850-900 pounds $82.75-87.50; 900-950 pounds $83.75-86.75; and 950-1000
pounds $81.25-84.25.
