50 YEARS AGO

            Fred Bauer of Denver is reported to have bought from Frank Hinkston of Lazbuddie , Texas , 211 coming two year-old feeder steers weighing 953 pounds at $19.70.

            Harvey Martin of San Angelo last week received 107 mixed calves weighing around 430 pounds at $16 and $18, and 28 mixed yearlings weighing 619 and 642 at $15 and $17 from W.G. Currie of Paint Rock. These were resold to Gale Eastman of Amarillo .

            Bob Chandler of Texas Livestock Marketing Association, Fort Worth , last weekend shipped, from Brady, 1082 clipped feeder lambs weighing 76 pounds at $16.50 cwt. These were bought from D.K. McMullan Jr., Big Lake .

            Lewis Cooper of Kenna , New Mexico , this week bought 600 steer yearlings from Ross Sears of Artesia for immediate delivery at $18.50 for about 400 head weighing around 600 pounds and $20 for 200 weighing around 400 pounds.

            Sim Reeves Jr., a Fort Stockton youngster who has shown champion calves at some of the nation’s top stock shows, but never before won the coveted honor at home, showed a heavyweight Highland Hereford that topped all entries in both the Pecos County and West-of-the-Pecos open class shows here last week. The calf was bought last year from Hays Mitchell of Marfa.

 45 YEARS AGO

            Fred Darden of Visalia , Calif. , bought 500 fed steers described as “good but plain quality” for delivery this month and next at $26 from O.N. Jennings & Son, Muleshoe; these will have been on feed 100-200 days and are expected to weigh around 1050 pounds at delivery.

            Henry Cone of Canyon, Texas, bought two loads of plain steer yearlings weighing 690 pounds at $24.80 from Bob Loudder and Jack Hays of Happy, delivered last Saturday; also one load of mixed steer and heifer calves and yearlings weighing 554 at $28 straight from Ed Weick of Umbarger; and sold 23 good young cows with 13 calves on them at $265 to Max Koch, Umbarger.

            Hall Medford, Amarillo , bought from Jewel Avent, Tulia, 100 good quality cows, fours and fives, at $250 per head and received them last week.

            Ranchers Feed Yards at Fort Stockton is custom feeding 3600 lambs, reports Bert Kincaid, owner. Included are 1800 head which were shipped recently from the Eden area off dried-out grain fields.

            Leon Wilhelm, Amarillo , bought 60 Angus cows, fours to sixes, weighing near 1000 pounds and with five calves on them, at $258 per cow and received them last week from W.S. Cline, Amarillo

            L.A. Hudson of Groom bought, on order, 100 heifers and steers weighing about 560 pounds at $18 and $21 and received them last week from Raymond Maddox of Pampa .

            E.L. Barnett of Amarillo sold 100 good quality Hereford steers averaging 490 pounds at $21.60, delivered last week to an Amarillo buyer.

            Bob Wilkinson of Canyon sold 135 heifers expected to weigh 700 pounds for delivery this week to a Colorado feeder at $18.

            Wayne Yocum of Hereford bought, for Wilson & Co., Oklahoma City , two loads of fed heifers described as 70 percent choice, balance good, weighing 1012 pounds, at $22 for delivery this week from Frank Cooper of Amarillo .

            R.C. Womble of Stinnett, Texas, bought 222 heifers and 211 steers averaging 448 pounds pay weight at $20 straight across and received them last week from Wade Reddell of Dumas. These cattle came off wheat pasture and included Herefords, Angus and Hereford-Angus crossbreds (Angfords).

     Uvalde Feed Yards delivered 1883 fat lambs averaging 101 pounds to Swift & Co. at $26.50 weighed at the lot with four percent shrink; the feedlot bought 5000-6000 feeder lambs at $25 or less, top price for good summer-clipped lambs 70 pounds or better.

        Roy Wood of Farley , N.M. , was reported to have bought 548 Okie heifers and steers weighing 380 pounds at $24.50 and $28 in the Texarkana and Fayetteville , Ark. areas.

      Pratt Feedlot, Pratt , Kan. , sold 712 steers weighing 1057-1150 at $27.50 to Kansas packers.

      Dumas Cattle Feeders Inc., Dumas, sold 161 good and choice 1100 pound steers at $26.75 to an Oklahoma packer and 822 mostly choice 1100-1125 pound steers at $27.75 to a Kansas packer.

       Hereford Feed Yards sold 135 mostly choice 1000-1025 pound steers at $28.50 to a Texas packer.

   Tommy Buckner, Dalhart, bought in that area for Nortex Feedlot Co., Dalhart, 175 No. 1 Okie heifers weighing 500 pounds at $47.50.

      Hansford Feedyard, Spearman: 200 steers, 1175 lbs., 70% choice, $49.75; 100 steers, 1175 lbs., 75% choice, $50.

      Vernon Estes, Bovina, sold and delivered to a local buyer 272 No. 1 Okie heifers weighing 437 pounds at $48.

      John Womack, Canyon, bought at
Altus , Okla. , 160 Holstein steers weighing 850 pounds at $44.75.

       Continental Cattle Co., Amarillo and Dodge City , Kan. , bought in the Dodge City area 110 choice Hereford and black baldface steers weighing 650 pounds at $53, and 126 No. 1 Okie steers weighing 675 at $53.75.

     In Wyoming ’s Big Horn Basin , some 105 pound feeder lambs have been delivered to the feedlot at $75.

     Dale Cattle Co., Abilene , bought in that area for May delivery 1900 No. 1 Okie heifers and steers expected to weigh 650 pounds at $65 and $70.

    Far-Tex Feeders, Farwell: 505 steers, 1050-1075 lbs., 65-75% choice, $60; 100 Holstein steers, 1075 lbs., 50% choice, $58.50.

        Buck and Jim Sumners, representing B&J Cattle Co., Dalhart, bought in the Texas Panhandle 318 No. 1 steers weighing 690 pounds at $70; in the Oklahoma Panhandle 190 similar heifers weighing 475 at $69.

      Texas Beef Producers Feed Yard, Dumas: 249 steers, 1075 lbs., 65% choice, $59.75; 134 steers, 1080 lbs., 65% choice, $60.

    Livestock owners in 42 Texas drouth designated counties have been okayed for 3.2 million bushels of corn out of government storage, though producers have not yet picked up all of it.

      The Blackwell, Okla. teleauction sold 430 lambs at $60.25 for shorn, $58.25 wooled.

       Bill Porter, representing Clarendon Cattle Co., Clarendon, sold to an Oklahoma buyer 700 preconditioned Okie steers weighing 360 at $65; to a Canyon buyer 200 preconditioned heifers weighing 384 at $58.

       Jarboe-Lackey Feedlot, Parsons, Kan. : 337 steers, 1180 lbs., 60% choice, $109 in the beef.

       Stiles Cattle Co., Cuero, bought in the local area 118 No. 1 haired crossbred steers weighing 361 pounds at $110.50; 108 similar steers weighing 434 at $103.25; 120 No. 1 haired crossbred heifers weighing 330 at $101; 95 similar steers weighing 535 at $92.

         Some 100 pound New Mexico feeder lambs have been sold off alfalfa fields at $70.

       Joe Johnson, representing Cherry Cattle Co.,  Bowling Green , Ky. , sold on a delivered basis to an Oklahoma buyer one load of No. 1 mixed color heifers weighing 411 pounds at $93.83.

    Brown Cattle Co., Clyde , sold on a delivered basis to New Mexico buyers one load of No. 1˝ English and Brahman cross steers and bulls to weigh 378 pounds at $74.97, also one load of No. 1˝ to toppy No. 2 English and Brahman cross heifers weighing 448 at $64.15.

    North Platte Feeders, North Platte, Neb.: 1800 steers, 1300-1350 lbs., 65% choice, $62; 1200 heifers, 1200-1250 lbs., 65% choice, $62.

      Lamb and mutton passed for entry into the U.S. last week amounted to 983 metric tons, or 2.16 million pounds and the equivalent of 54 percent of domestic production.

     Ty Jones Cattle Co., Canyon, bought in New Mexico for March delivery 1000 No. 1 Okie and crossbred steers to weigh 700 pounds at $72, also 450 similar heifers to weigh 625 at $69, and 480 No. 1 exotic and native cross heifers to weigh 700 at $68; in Central Texas for February delivery 800 No. 1 exotic cross steers to weigh 750 at $71.
