Plains fed cattle prices are still a far cry from their heady highs of late last year, but they came roaring back that direction this week, gaining as much as $6 over the bulk of last week’s trade.

Fed and non-fed cattle slaughtering facilities were scrambling this week to implement the changes imposed by Secretary of Agriculture Anne Veneman in late December as a result of the Washington state BSE case. The changes deal with process controls for advanced meat recovery, “specified risk” material, product holding and stunning.

Feeder Cattle Prices Suffer Sharp Declines Across Nation
Compared to the last good market test the week ending December 19 and before the first positive case of BSE in the United States was reported, feeder and stocker cattle prices trended $5-15 lower across the country.

Fed Cattle Prices Closed Higher Last Week; Beef Values Decline  
The lion’s share of slaughter cattle sales occurred Tuesday at prices steady with the previous week.

Angelo Lambs Higher, Goats, Cattle Lower  
Feeder lambs were not well tested this week, slaughter lambs $1-2 higher, slaughter ewes steady to $3 lower; nannies sold weak to $2 lower and kids weak to $5 lower. Receipts totaled 10,014 head, around 20 percent slaughter ewes, 10 percent slaughter lambs, five percent feeder lambs and 65 percent goats.

Most Brownwood Feeder Cattle Prices Steady
Feeder steer calves sold steady, yearlings $2-5 lower, heifers steady, slaughter cows and bulls steady, stock cows and pairs steady. Receipts totaled 429 head.

Abilene Feeder Steer, Heifer Trends Higher  
Feeder steers sold $2-3 higher, plain kinds off $1, heifers $3-5 higher, slaughter cows and bulls $2-3 higher. Receipts totaled 920 head.

Fredericksburg Feeder Steers, Heifers Lower  
Feeder steers and heifers sold $2-3 lower on receipts of 410 head.

Most Hamilton Sheep, Goats, Cattle Steady  
Lambs and ewes sold steady Monday, kids steady and nannies higher. Receipts totaled 2395 head. All cattle classes sold steady Tuesday on receipts of 407 head.

2003 Livestock Exports Less Than Half Of 2002
United States
livestock exports to Mexico last year were down 54 percent at 376,787 head. All classes except horses were on the negative side. In contrast, feeder cattle imports were up 54 percent at 1,224,936 head.

Fredericksburg Lambs Higher, Goats Lower
Feeder lambs sold $5-10 higher, slaughter lambs $8-10 higher except lightweights steady; slaughter goats were $5-7 lower. Receipts totaled 3042 head.

Boxed Beef Values Off $11.28 For Last Week  
The national comprehensive boxed beef cutout report on all fed steers and heifers sold last week dropped $11.28 to $125.96, a total decline of $20.65 for the two weeks of this year, and the lowest average since the week ending July 18. All grade categories suffered similar declines, while losses on popular cuts were most severe and cheaper cuts lost only a couple a dollars.

Domestic Wool Slow, Aussie Sales Higher  
Wool trading was slow through the holidays, and supplies remain light in both first hands and warehouses. Demand was light to moderate as most interests waited to see how Australian markets open the new year following sharply higher currency exchanges through the holidays. Export demand was moderate to good to selected destinations.

Billings Lambs Show Firmness, Ewes Weak  
Feeder lambs had a higher undertone compared to the last sale in December; slaughter ewes were lower. Receipts totaled 1022 head.

U.S. Meat Production 7.6% Below A Year Ago
Total red meat production under federal inspection last week was estimated at 829.1 million pounds, 20.1 percent more than a week earlier but 7.6 percent less than a year ago. Cumulative meat production for the year to date, covering one day fewer than a year ago, was down 21.3 percent at 1.06 billion pounds.

Lastovica Angus Bull Sale Averages $2263  
Fifty-seven yearling registered bulls averaged $2263 at the annual Lastovica Angus Farm sale.

Decatur Cattle Trade Called Dollars Higher  
Feeder calves and yearlings sold dollars higher, slaughter cows and bulls steady to $3 higher, stock cows and pairs strong. Receipts totaled 1256 head.

Lampasas Feeder Steer, Heifer Prices Steady  
All classes of cattle sold steady to $2 lower compared to the last sale in December. Receipts totaled 279 head.

Mason, San Saba Calf Prices Remain Steady
Feeder steers and heifers sold steady in Mason and San Saba for the first sales of the new year, yearlings $2-4 lower, slaughter cows and bulls $3-4 lower. Receipts totaled 687 head at the two sales.

Llano Feeder Steers Up, Heifers Steady  
Feeder steers sold steady to $3 lower, heifers steady, slaughter cows and bulls steady. Receipts totaled 424 head.

Milano Feeder Steers, Heifers Trade Higher  
Feeder steers and heifers sold $3-5 higher, slaughter cows $1-2 lower, bulls steady. Receipts totaled 869 head.

Junction Sheep, Goat Prices Mostly Steady
Most sheep and goats sold steady, except kids were $2 higher. Receipts totaled 2054 head.

Most Comanche Cattle Sharply Higher  
Feeder steers and heifers sold $10-15 higher, slaughter cows $5-10 higher, bulls $3-4 higher. Receipts totaled 395 head.

Coleman Feeder Steer, Heifer Prices Lower
Feeder steers sold $1-2 lower, heifers $2-3 lower, slaughter cows and bulls steady, stock cows and pairs $10-20 lower. Receipts totaled 837 head.
