2003 Livestock Exports
Less Than Half Of 2002  

            LAS CRUCES , N.M. —(USDA)— United States livestock exports to Mexico last year were down 54 percent at 376,787 head. All classes except horses were on the negative side. In contrast, feeder cattle imports were up 54 percent at 1,224,936 head.

            Beef cattle exports to Mexico were down 80 percent at 17,955 head, slaughter animals also off 80 percent at 12,738 head. Breeding animals were only down nine percent at 5217 head.

            Hog export numbers lost 29 percent at 173,828 head. Slaughter hogs were down 25 percent at 162,074 head, breeding animals off 59 percent at 11,754 head.

            Sheep exports were down 66 percent at 146,613 head. Slaughter animals were also down 66 percent at 145,255 head, breeding animals down 33 percent at 1358 head.

            Slaughter goat exports were down 29 percent at 22,266 head.

            Dairy cattle exports to Mexico were down 40 percent at 9619 head, all breeding animals.

            Horse exports were up 13 percent at 5385 head, and exotic animals lost 17 percent at 1121 head.
