U.S. Meat Production
7.6% Below A Year Ago  

            DES MOINES —(USDA)— Total red meat production under federal inspection last week was estimated at 829.1 million pounds, 20.1 percent more than a week earlier but 7.6 percent less than a year ago. Cumulative meat production for the year to date, covering one day fewer than a year ago, was down 21.3 percent at 1.06 billion pounds.

            Cattle slaughter was estimated at 567,000 head, compared with 439,000 a week earlier and 664,000 a year ago, liveweights 1248 pounds, 1248 and 1269, respectively; beef production was 421.5 million pounds. Cumulative cattle slaughter was down 29.1 percent at 705,000 head, beef production down 31.1 percent at 523.8 million pounds.

            Calf and veal slaughter was estimated at 22,000 head, 15,000 and 21,000, liveweights 326 pounds, 323 and 306; veal production was 4.3 million pounds. Cumulative slaughter was down 15.4 percent at 26,000 head, veal production down eight percent at 5.1 million pounds.

            Hog slaughter was estimated at 2,005,000 head, 1,794,000 and 1,928,000, liveweights 268 pounds, 270 and 269; pork production was 399.8 million pounds. Cumulative slaughter was down 8.8 percent at 2,660,000 head, pork production down 8.7 percent at 531 million pounds.

            Sheep and lamb slaughter was estimated at 50,000 head, 39,000 and 54,000, liveweights 139 pounds, 139 and 132; lamb and mutton production was 3.5 million pounds. Cumulative slaughter was down 22.8 percent at 60,000 head, lamb and mutton production down 17.9 percent at 4.2 million pounds.
