December Meat Supply
In Freezers Down 13% 

            WASHINGTON —(USDA)— Total red meat supplies in freezers on December 31 were down 13 percent from last year at 823.3 million pounds.

            Frozen beef supplies were down 25 percent from a year ago at 395.9 million pounds, boneless beef was down 26 percent at 342.6 million pounds, and beef cuts down 13 percent at 53.3 million pounds.

            Frozen pork was up slightly at 470.7 million pounds, hams down 17 percent at 49.6 million pounds, bellies up 73 percent at 49 million pounds, loins up 14 percent at 48.2 million pounds, and ribs down 14 percent at 79.8 million pounds.

            Veal in freezers was down 28 percent at five million pounds. Lamb and mutton was down 47 percent at 3.8 million pounds.

            Total frozen poultry supplies on December 31 were down 13 percent from last year's level at 963.5 million pounds. Stocks of chicken were down 21 percent at 609.3 million pounds, turkeys up six percent at 353.3 million pounds, and ducks down 81 percent at 1.2 million pounds.
