Production Sets
December Record High
WASHINGTON —(USDA)— December commercial red meat production
for the United States was slightly more than a year ago at 3.88
billion pounds. Pork production set a new record monthly high.
December beef production was down six percent at 1.97 billion
pounds. Cattle slaughter was down four percent at 2.67 million head,
the average liveweight down 21 pounds at 1244 pounds.
Veal production was up six percent at
19 million pounds. Calf slaughter was down one percent at 97,500 head,
the average liveweight up 17 pounds at 322 pounds.
Pork production was up nine percent at
1.87 billion pounds. Hog kill was up eight percent at 9.35 million
head, liveweight up one pound at 269 pounds.
Lamb and mutton production was down
three percent at 18 million pounds. Sheep and lamb slaughter was down
six percent at 262,000 head, average liveweight up four pounds at 137
pounds.
December contained one more weekday
than a year ago.
Commercial red meat production for 2003 was down one percent at
46.5 billion pounds. Accumulated beef production was down three
percent at 26.2 billion pounds, veal down two percent at 191.8 million
pounds, pork up one percent at 19.9 billion pounds, and lamb and
mutton production down nine percent at 199.4 million pounds.
Total 2003 commercial cattle slaughter was down one percent at
35.45 million head, liveweight down 20 pounds at 1231 pounds; calf
slaughter was down four percent at one million head, liveweight up
five pounds; hog slaughter was up one percent at 100.78 million head,
liveweight up one pound at 266 pounds; sheep and lamb slaughter was
down nine percent at 2.97 million head, liveweight up one pound at 134
pounds.
