U.S. Meat Production
2% Below A Year Ago
 

            ST. JOSEPH, Mo. —(USDA)— Total red meat production under federal inspection last week was estimated at 876.3 million pounds, 1.1 percent more than a week earlier and two percent less than a year ago. Cumulative meat production for the year to date was down 10.8 percent at 2.8 billion pounds.

Cattle slaughter was estimated at 617,000 head, compared with 592,000 a week earlier and 665,000 a year ago, liveweights 1248 pounds, 1247 and 1268, respectively; beef production was 461.4 million pounds. Cumulative cattle slaughter was down 17.7 percent at 1,910,000 head, beef production down 19.5 percent at 1.43 billion pounds.

Calf and veal slaughter was estimated at 21,000 head, 21,000 and 20,000, liveweights 319 pounds, 322 and 327; veal production was 4.3 million pounds. Cumulative slaughter was down 4.3 percent at 68,000 head, veal production down .3 percent at 13.3 million pounds.

Hog slaughter was estimated at 2,037,000 head, 2,096,000 and 1,898,000, liveweights 269 pounds, 268 and 268, pork production was 407.1 million pounds. Cumulative slaughter was up .1 percent at 6,798,000 head, pork production up .5 percent at 1.36 billion pounds.

Sheep and lamb slaughter was estimated at 53,000 head, 50,000 and 50,000, liveweights 141 pounds, 140 and 139; lamb and mutton production was 3.8 million pounds. Cumulative slaughter was down 9.3 percent at 163,000 head, lamb and mutton production down 4.3 percent at 11.6 million pounds.
