WASHINGTON —(USDA)— Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter
January 1 in feedlots with a capacity of 1000 or more head totaled
11.2 million head, six percent above last year but three percent below
two years ago.
December placements totaled 1.75 million, 10 percent above
December 2002 and 11 percent above the same period in 2001; net
placements were 1.66 million. Placements of cattle and calves weighing
less than 600 pounds came to 503,000 head; 600-699 pounds 529,000;
700-799 pounds 448,000; and 800 pounds and heavier 268,000. December
marketings totaled 1.74 million, three percent below last year and
four percent below the year before.
Other disappearance came to 90,000 head during December, nine
percent below 2002 and three percent below 2001.
Statistics from the seven leading states, compared to a year
earlier:
Cattle on feed: Arizona 293,000 head, up one percent;
California 510,000, up four percent; Colorado 1,040,000, up two
percent; Iowa 370,000, up four percent; Kansas 2,430,000, up 10
percent; Nebraska 2,280,000, up seven percent; and Texas 2,830,000, up
eight percent.
Placements: Arizona 32,000, up 28 percent; California 70,000,
up 27 percent; Colorado 180,000, up 24 percent; Iowa 50,000, down 23
percent; Kansas 410,000, up five percent; Nebraska 350,000, up three
percent; and Texas 420,000, up 17 percent.
Marketings: Arizona 22,000, down 19 percent; California 55,000,
unchanged; Colorado 190,000, up three percent; Iowa 48,000, down 19
percent; Kansas 435,000, down seven percent; Nebraska 340,000, down
eight percent; and Texas 410,000, up three percent. |
