The National Demolition Contractors Association met in Las
Vegas. When people destroy buildings for a living, it's a
wonder they can find a place to meet.

Yesterday my time, and 10 days ago yours, our last
hospital patient crumpled and fell on the way to the chute for
her final shot. We watched helpless as she passed on to the
black cow paradise of spineless prickly pear, mountains of
yellow cottonseed meal, and limitless meadows of mesquite
grasses. |

From the first day I met Ken, I knew that we were going
to be friends. Ken was born and raised in a large Pennsylvania
city, and when he was 12 his family took him on vacation to an
Arizona dude ranch. From that day on, all Ken ever wanted to
do was move out west and become a cowboy. |

In a span of five hours last Saturday, I went from one
of the most remote locations in Texas (a hunting camp in the
heart of the King Ranch) to one of the most hectic (I-35 in
Austin). And while I much prefer the former, duty also
dictates occasional sojourns to the latter. The forces that
pull folks to such dipolar destinations are deserved of a
study in physics. |

I think that the pendulum may be swinging too far in the fight
against spam in e-mail. Recently both my wife and I have been
told that our mail is not getting through, apparently due to
spam filters. My wife wanted to write the editor of the
McMurry University newspaper, the War Whoop, to
congratulate them on the quality of the paper. She used the
e-mail address given in the paper and she got a message saying
that it wasn’t delivered because they don’t accept spam.

Like politics and religion, the controversy that surrounds foal
heat breeding continues to rage. With both sides taking highly
emotional positions, oftentimes the real issues are forgotten
during the battle of opinions.
