50 YEARS AGO

Lem Jones of Junction this week bought 100 yearling and two year-old steers from Thomas Degan of San Antonio for immediate delivery at $17.50; the yearlings are expected to weigh around 600 pounds and the two year-olds from 750 to 800 pounds. The steers were described as good quality, but still carrying their horns.

Jones also bought 125 cows and calves from Harry Dietert of Midway at $130 a pair and resold these to G.C. McCoy of Kerrville.

Clarence Alexander of Guymon, Oklahoma, sold 120 steer yearlings to Roy sheets of Canadian, Texas, at $20.50, April 1-15 delivery.

Jimmy Mills of Del Rio and Doug Kirby of Ozona last week sold 6000 wooled feeder lambs, weighing 102 to 105 pounds delivered off Kansas wheat fields, at 21 cents a pound.

Bob Mayer of Denver sold 200 heifer yearlings weighing 600 pounds at $18, March 9 delivery; also 260 steers weighing 750 pounds off wheat near Amarillo at $20.

Mid-West Feed Yards in San Angelo bought 700 fall-shorn fleshy feeder lambs weighing about 95 pounds from Foster Sims Price, Sterling City, at $19; last week, Mid-West bought 1000 lambs from Joe Blakeney of San Angelo for

April 1 delivery immediately out of shearing pens at $18.

George Brown, Channing, Texas, sold 200 mixed calves for October delivery at $31 and $33 for heifers and steers, respectively, to a Dumas, Texas buyer; these are expected to average about 400 pounds at delivery.

Jewel Avent of Tulia, Texas, bought 100 steer yearlings at $32.50 for part of them weighing 500 pounds and $30 for others weighing 670 pounds, delivered off wheat March 7 from Ray Bivens of Tulia.

Ray Burger & Son, Groom, Texas, sold and delivered 70 heifer yearlings averaging 700 pounds at $27 to Ralph Britten of Groom.

J.R. McCoy & Son, Tucumcari, N.M., sold 100 heifer calves weighing 502 pounds at $30, delivered March 6 to Everett Copeland & Son, Kingsdown, Kan.

S.B. Loudder of Canyon and Herschel Tomlinson of Adrian, Texas, sold 99 mixed calves weighing 407 pounds at $27.90 straight across to E.H. Lindsey, Canyon, delivered March 7.

Joe Keast of Dalhart sold 360 steers described as choice to fancy quality, expected to weigh 650 pounds, at $22.65 and 160 good steers to weigh 700 at $21.50 for April 20-25 delivery to Q. Frederick of Sikeston, Mo.

Sloan Osborn of Friona sold 83 cows described as good young Angus, half with calves and the rest springers, at $140 each to an Amarillo buyer.

John Simmons of Bushland, Texas, sold 423 steers, including Angus, Herefords and Angus-Hereford crossbreds, expected to weigh 625-650 pounds at $21, for delivery next week to an Amarillo buyer; these are to be trucked 28 to 50 miles and weighed straight.

Gary Simms of Panhandle sold 110 heifer yearlings expected to average 500 pounds at $18.50 for delivery this week to an Amarillo buyer.

Elmer Rigoni of Roy, N.M., last week sold 100 choice Hereford steer calves weighing about 400 pounds at $23.50 to Leonard Payton of Roy. Rigoni bought 100 choice Hereford mixed calves weighing about 350 pounds at $18 and $23 for March 20 delivery from Sam Beckham, Jal, N.M.

Mike Echeverria, Casa Grande, Ariz., sold 839 two year-old Rambouillet type ewes with 65 pound lambs at $50 a pair in the wool off alfalfa fields at Wellton, Ariz; 3650 three to six year-old ewes with baby to 65-pound lambs at side in the wool at $37.50 to Joe Mendiburu, Bakersfield, Calif., plus 1000 similar pairs in the wool at $35 and 1150 two year-old open ewes out of the wool at $32 to Bill Moran Livestock Co., Huron, Calif., the latter two deals through Gene Yparrea, Fresno, Calif.

Arizona-Colorado Cattle Co., Phoenix, sold about 950 steers on feed at the Anderson-Hamman feedlot, Portales, N.M., expected to weigh about 1075 and grade 60-70 percent choice, at $28.25. These cattle were originally from Mexico and summered on the owners’ ranches in Colorado.

Travis Killough, Fort Sumner, N.M. livestock broker, sold for L.O. Hudson, Clovis, and Paul Hudson, Melrose, 550 Hereford and black baldface steers expected to weigh 850 pounds at $27 for late October delivery to a Nebraska buyer.

San Angelo Packing Co. bought 400 oldcrop lambs in No. 1 pelts at $29.50 delivered from a Goldthwaite feedlot.

W.H. Bellinghousen, Munday, sold to a Dalhart buyer 400 Hereford, black baldface and a few Charolais steers weighing about 775 pounds at $45.

Bill Porter, Clarendon, bought in the Wellington area one pot load of No. 1 Okie heifers weighing about 400 pounds at $35 and in the Quail, Texas area 100 Hereford and black baldface steers weighing 525 at $40, all delivered.

About 30,000 pounds of 1993 adult mohair has sold in San Angelo at $1.25 grease f.o.b. the warehouse.

The American Wool and Mohair Assn. offered about 35,000 pounds of wool clipped at sealed bid Tuesday. High bid was 41.375 cents f.o.b. member warehouses.

Feeder lambs moving direct in West Texas were mostly $75 on newcrops. In Wyoming 109-pound oldcrops turned at $60 and in North Dakota lambs averaging 110 pounds also went at $60.

Vann-Roach Cattle Co., Fort Worth, bought in the Texas Panhandle for delivery later this month 800 choice steers to weigh 775 pounds at $73.50, also two loads of No. 1 English and exotic cross steers to weigh 775 at $72; for current delivery 250 similar steers weighing 775 at $73 and two loads of such steers weighing 735 at $72.

San Angelo fat lambs of 100-130 pounds brought $64-70.50, 130-155 pounds , $63-65. Newcrop 95-105 pounders made $73.50-78. Goldthwaite fats were $64-74, Junction lambs $63.50-68.50.
