U.S. Meat Production
Declines One Percent
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. —(USDA)— Total red meat production under
federal inspection last week was estimated at 856.3 million pounds,
2.8 percent more than a week earlier and one percent less than a year
ago. Cumulative meat production for the year to date was down 5.7
percent at 7.88 billion pounds.
Cattle slaughter was estimated at 615,000 head, compared with
582,000 a week earlier and 639,000 a year ago, liveweights 1231
pounds, 1238 and 1247, respectively; beef production was 457.1 million
pounds. Cumulative cattle slaughter was down 10.2 percent at 5,517,000
head, beef production down 11.6 percent at 4.12 billion pounds.
Calf and veal slaughter was estimated at 18,000 head, 17,000 and
21,000, liveweights 336 pounds, 340 and 316; veal production was 3.6
million pounds. Cumulative slaughter was down 9.9 percent at 174,000
head, veal production down 7.5 percent at 33.9 million pounds.
Hog slaughter was estimated at 1,962,000 head, 1,955,000 and
1,907,000, liveweights 267 pounds, 268 and 268; pork production was
391.5 million pounds. Cumulative slaughter was up 1.2 percent at
18,408,000 head, pork production up two percent at 3.69 billion
pounds.
Sheep and lamb slaughter was estimated at 59,000 head, 53,000 and
55,000, liveweights 140 pounds, 140 and 142; lamb and mutton
production was 4.1 million pounds. Cumulative slaughter was down 3.2
percent at 478,000 head, lamb and mutton production down 1.8 percent
at 33.1 million pounds.
