Domestic Wool Slow, Aussies
Up, S. African Mohair Higher
GREELEY, Colo. —(USDA)— Trading on domestic wool remained slow
last week as weather interrupted shearing in many areas with snow, ice
or muddy conditions. Demand was moderate to good.
In Territory trading, Montana sold 8000 pounds of 24-25 micron,
original bag, bellies out and untied, 3-3.5 inch, high yielding at
$1.20 f.o.b. grease; Colorado, 54,000 pounds lamb wool, 19-22 micron
2-2.75 inch, high yielding, $.90-1 f.o.b., 1.5-2 inch $.50-.80,
crossbred/blackface 24-28 micron 2-3 inch $.45-.50; Wyoming, 15,000
pounds mostly 24-24.5 micron, OB, BOU, 3-3.25 inch (76-83 mm), high
yielding, choice style, (includes 300 head yearling 21-22 micron)
$1.12, tags $.15 and bellies $.40.
A Roswell, N.M., warehouse sale offering 350,000 pounds of older,
mixed style, usually shorter length and lower yielding wool, sold 80
percent. Trading was moderate and demand moderate to fairly good. The
undertone was higher. A few 12-month OB, BI, 21-22.5 micron,
three-inch plus wools were $1-1.12 f.o.b. the warehouse with no
adjustment for freight or handling charges, blackface 30-34 micron
$.55, lamb wool, OB, BOU, 19-22 micron, 1.75-2.25 inch, few to 2.5
inch $.85-1.03, mostly $.90-1.01, lot 2.75 inch $1.0425, lot 23.5
micron $.85, 19-22 micron 1.5-2 inch $.51-.85, 23-26 micron $.54-.70,
28-30 micron $.58.
Australian markets closed the week higher, the eastern market
indicator up 15 at 787A cents per kilo clean. A total of 61,571 bales
were offered with sales at 90 percent. All prices are in U.S. dollars
per pound f.o.b. Sydney. The 21 micron grease wool contracts for April
were up two at $2.99, June up five at $3.02, August up 12 at $3.03,
October up seven at $3.01, December up five at $3.01, and February
2005 $3.02. The 19 micron clean wool contracts for April were up one
at $3.36, June down 2 at $3.39, August unchanged at $3.44, and October
$3.47. The 23 micron clean wool contracts for April were up four at
$2.71, June up three at $2.70, August up seven at $2.71, and October
$2.68. The Australian dollar was .7518 U.S. compared to .6127 last
year, an increase of 23 percent from last year but 10 percent lower
than the past few weeks. Last year’s market indicator was 1086A
cents per kilo clean.
Texas mohair trading remains slow under moderate demand. On sales
totaling 15,000 pounds, OB, fine fall kid hair was $5.50, adult $1.42
f.o.b. the warehouse.
South Africa’s second Cape mohair sale of the season saw positive
results on all classes. A major factor was the increased quality and
length of hair. Adult hair advanced 3-4 percent and kid hair advanced
12 percent, both despite an advancing currency market on the rand. All
kid hair averaged $7.60 U.S. per pound, young goat hair $3.52, fine
adult $2.46, and strong adult $2.44. In detailed quotations, long kid
hair less than 26 micron was $9.09-12.50 U.S. f.o.b. South Africa,
average $11.15, 26-28 micron $5.06-8.20, average $6.69, over 28 micron
$4.44-5.40, average $4.74; long young goat less than 30 micron
$4.30-5.04, average $4.62, 30-32 micron $2.80-4.17, average $3.55,
over 32 micron $2.48-3.08, average $2.72; long adult less than 34
micron $2.49-2.80, average $2.56, 34-36 micron $2.41-2.49, average
$2.48, 36-38 micron $2.45-2.49, average $2.48 and over 38 micron
$2.46-2.49, average $2.48. Ninety-five percent sold on a total volume
of 72,049 pounds.
