Plains Fed Cattle Movement
Significant At Lower Prices
Plains feedlots generally resisted lower bids last week, but they
didn’t sell many cattle doing it, and this week the resistance
crumbled.
The Texas Cattle Feeders Association counted about 40,000 head
selling in their area at $83 compared to $87-88 two weeks ago and
$86-87 on light movement last week. The area showlist was up only
about 2000 head at 77,118, but captives rose 8452 head to 41,964,
which gave packers leverage.
Elsewhere, direct trade ranged from $82.50 to $83.50 live and
generally $133-135 dressed. Midwest terminals paid $80-85, bulk
$81-83.
Stocker and feeder cattle prices varied a bit to either side of
steady this week.
Joplin, Mo. sold 7800 head and called heifers steady to firm,
steers steady to $2 lower, some lightweights as much as $6 lower. A
roundup of four Florida auctions was $1-2 lower on 4200 head between
them, and La Junta, Colo. termed about 1000 head steady to $1 lower on
weights under 700 pounds, steady to $1 higher on heavier weights.
In Texas, Hallettsville was steady on 1589 head, Crockett steady to
$2 higher on 1136. Three Rivers sold 1333 head and found weights under
500 pounds steady, heavier kinds $2-4 higher. Amarillo counted 3552
head and reported weights under 600 pounds steady to weak, instances
$3 lower, heavier weights firm to $2 higher.
Oklahoma City receipts came to 8183 head, and prices were steady on
all but stocker weight heifers, which sold steady to $2 higher. Best
