Mexican Cattle Imports
Down 5%, Exports Nil

LAS CRUCES, N.M. —(USDA)— Feeder cattle imports from Mexico through the week ending March 20 totaled 253,934 head, down five percent from last year.

There have been no cattle exported to Mexico this year because of the BSE cow found in Washington state in December. The number exported by this time last year was 6960 head.

Sheep and goat exports to Mexico stopped in late February. Sheep exports are now down 73 percent from a year ago at 13,675 head. Goat exports are down 71 percent at 1095 head.

Slaughter hog exports to Mexico are running 154 percent more than a year ago at 96,254 head. Horse exports to Mexico are up 68 percent at 1196 head. That includes 339 head for slaughter compared to 97 a year ago.
